Happy new year! Why not create some action steps to go with that resolution? You are more likely to make a change if you create a realistic plan.

No one can change the past but we can do the best we can with today. Some days that might be taking a break to eat lunch, other days it might be starting something new.

Don’t forget to take breaks to regroup and ground yourself this holiday.

Mean what you say. Say what you mean. And don’t say it mean is a saying I love. You can communicate when you don’t like something someone said or did so it doesn’t build up into a resentment.

If going home for the holidays means seeing an unsafe person create a plan. Going for a walk, a drive, going into another room or even putting in earphones can create space when you don’t want to engage. Reach out to friends for support when you feel overwhelmed. Put yourself first this holiday.

One of the skills I work on with my clients is self-advocacy. When you advocate, you may not get the result you want or deserve, but your voice and your point of view are important. You deserve to take up space in the world. #therapy #mentalhealth

As a therapist working with children, I have seen teachers misinterpret anxiety and adhd in children as defiant behavior instead of fear and dysregulation. I have also seen girls and POC being especially singled out as ‘bad’ and not in need of extra support.

After finishing assessment, your therapist should provide you with a diagnosis and walk you through how they arrived at that diagnosis using the DSM. You’d never continue seeing a doctor who didn’t provide you with a diagnosis.

Need a quick happiness boost? Instead of scrolling why not look through the photos on your phone. Each photo will have a memory attached (most likely a happy or interesting moment). This guy is in most of my photos.

Your therapist should be working with you to identify social supports and increase interaction with those supports. Therapists should NEVER set themselves up as the client’s only resource. To me, that’s a red flag.

One of my favorite things about my clients who have an ADHD diagnosis is their ability to think outside the box and to challenge the status quo. They truly are society’s change makers.

Changes in appetite and loss of motivation can be indicators of mental health issues. Getting checked by a doctor is always the first action to rule out physiological condition. Doctors can also give questionnaires that help identify anxiety and depression symptoms.

When starting with a therapist, you should always create goals for therapy together. This helps you to know when you’ve made progress or if what you’re doing together isn’t working. The therapist should also revisit your goals during the therapeutic process and highlight progress.

ADHD makes it harder to break projects into smaller tasks and put them in order. Feeling stuck - ask yourself out loud ‘what’s the first thing you would do?’ And, write down the answer. Keep going until you have a step by step plan. Follow the plan and check off each item as you go.
