If anything, I wish more white cishet young people took that as an opportunity to challenge this kind of energy. If more parents knew that their own children want better for themselves, and more neighbours saw children fighting to learn and be more empathetic, these hateful movements lose power.

I can't imagine being one of those households' kids, not only learning in real time alongside your entire county that your parents are bigots, but becoming a classroom disruption & getting a worse education over politics you may not even share.

Now, in Montgomery County, Maryland, where the case originated, the results are in.

Only 43 families out of 160,000 students have exercised that new right.

I think at this point it is almost facetious to repeat that Platforms Aren't Your Friends, especially to people who need social media processes in order to promote work. the only reason I am not in a hurry to migrate to another AtProto PDS for this account is because I'd much rather use this urgency to figure out a new author website and syndicate posts from there so I can be free from the hellish doomscrolling altogether

Also yes. But if I'm being honest, the longer I think about it, I don't put this on the author per se.

Someone in her publishing professional circle--her agent, or her editor's boss--gave her the idea. The idea is cursed, but that's their fault, IMHO.

Both of these points are true, but also—if I was making fuckoff money already (an difficult accomplishment in this industry), then someone suggested an opportunity that would triple my fuckoff advance but would cause people back home to laugh at me… I have enough fuckoff money to *say no*, don’t I?

I think there is a subset of publishing professionals who know that books are Commodities but somehow forget that they’re possessions, leading to decisions that were made by people who’ve never pondered which books to give away, or how to ensure a collection survives three moves & a flash flood.
