FARMER

landrace crusader.

ghost of a Hut 8 Wren.

I'm convinced not being able to eat #food without seed saving is it's own ancient addiction. Presently living in a city w/no land, & yet good organic Delicata seeds will now join the two boxes of seeds I've been collecting for the day I have any land. 🤜🌱

Also black bean chicken with Delicata

The signature of the ocean
is how quick it changes
from day to day
hour to hour
minute to minute
which is easy to tap into
if observation is your meditation,
your teacher,
and your bliss.
It's how you know
to swim
at glass sunrise
before a storm
and
where and how to look for sharks teeth.

$18 of top round 3 ways -
(from the "weird" natural #food store - cheaper as "grass fed" & pasture raised than gassed antibiotic grocery store meat somehow.)

Broiled w/roasted ube & garlic asparagus.

Steak & cheddar cheese sandwich with horseradish.

Steak tacos with slaw & three hot sauces.

This is a (poor quality) photo of our scallion rows which were planted basically the same as our onions - one big berm with 4 rows but the onions were spaced further apart (roughly half that dense) Our overwintered onions were huge. If I run across any photos of them I share.

Even tho I'm always trying to get back to the country -

..being in a city rich with immigrants where a spread like this still costs $20 & a block away is an Afghan kabob house, an old trattoria, & so on is a real blessing.

I'm grateful to live around such diverse knowledge and tradition.

I didn't mean to Jackson Pollock the espresso shortbread, but I don't hate it.

Living in an old city means this is my Aldi parking lot a mile from my house. Early in the morning I can always hear the trains on the tracks that surround my neighborhood.

Excuse me? The mill I photographed 10 years ago has been closed almost 100 years? Ai 0/10. At least my comment changed the search results, but seriously feels reflective of how incorrectly confident humans are of "facts". I'm a show me state girl - I show up. I was in it - I know that b$tch be open.

The forest was kind today & had I checked my @oldfarmersalmanac.bsky.social I would have been less surprised seeing plantain, dandelion, raspberry, wild chives, wood sorrel, alpine strawberry, stinging nettles...all sprouting like spring.

🍜

Mutton and lentils with wild chive & stinging nettle tea.

That means 88% of soy is considered commodity crop (all the soy is precision gps harvested either way so no fields of farm workers) and so they get commodity subsidies that started in the 30's based on globalization after overproduction just like corn and ethanol...

@janenodough.bsky.social 🫶 This one's for you - re: kitchen fails...

Every year I try and use my Granny Nova Jean's cookie cutters - imagining how glorious her cookies looked... and well baking genes are recessive in me.

Christmas cookies 2015 and yesterday.
Less fail, but still wrong :D

That's so wild, but I can believe it. I guess that makes the book I've been writing the last 10 years comparing that time to now timely..if people want to know. I'm starting to realize some don't. Also did the cigarette thing 30 years (now 10 without)... and it definitely suppressed hunger alright.

adaptation vs manifest destiny

the reverence for cyclical harmony
vs search/seek/destroy

power of connection
vs power of power

the acceptance and embracing of the "imperfect"
vs. the ruthless destruction of anything obstructing "perfection"

I may not say when I harvest native horsetail from the river-bottoms...

(that I buy from Poland as a tea because 'mericans are obsessed with "native" plants but don't know fuck about them so I still have to get my horsetail tea from clear Polish people)

...but there will be signs.
