You could always go birdwatching for ducks…

Here’s a shot of one of the cupules and you can see how weathered it is.

I’m a sucker for robins but this one is especially nice.

🤣 I constantly fight them too. Half of my patio cactus plants are gnawed off

I can confirm that the location of this boulder is in a very logical place for a trail alongside a long deep arroyo that leads directly into the heart of the mountains and to prime hunting. So I guess that it was a marker and a resting place.

From “Old Pueblo Archaeology” dated June 2020 “Presumably trails led to or beside many of the cupule-rock locations in the southern Southwest, so possibly some of them were considered to be trail markers or resting places…” Allen Dart and Chris Reed

A large granite boulder with cupules on the top surface. The cupules are hemispherical-shaped with the largest a bit larger than a half ping pong ball. These are very weathered and have rough surfaces inside so I think they are pretty old.

I’m more partial to the second than to the first, truth be told.

Someone left this note on my window today while I was out and about. Not at all sure what prompted it. Is this a regular thing?

Yeah, it’s bindweed, but it holds the soil down and the butterflies love it. Catalina State Park, Tucson, AZ

Your pirka are what we call cairns. These are not cairns or pirka. The path runs along the bottom of a canyon that is impossible to climb out of. There is only the way forward and the way back. There is no right or left. So stacking the rocks is pointless and leaves an unnecessary mark.

If you’re looking for a good Halloween movie Bring Her Back on HBO is it.

Why do people stack rocks when they hike? These are not cairns. I’m genuinely curious. This is in Catalina State Park in Tucson.
