TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

Offsets are like a smoker paying a healthy person to go for a run, then claiming they’ve reduced their risk of cancer.

The healthy person gains some benefit. The smoker gains nothing. And cancer rates don’t change.

Forestry Carbon Credit Programs Have a Poor Track Record. Can a More Refined Approach Fix the Problem? — Inside Climate News
The Family Forest Carbon Program pays landowners not to timber their trees, then sells the additional growth as carbon credits. But critics question whether it leads to overall emissions reductions.

The traditional fire season won't start for another few months in Northern Georgia, but North Georgia Technical College put on a great introductory course (S130/S190) last week. I had a wonderful time working as Cadre for another fantastic group of (maybe) future firefighters.

I want to give credit to my editors, who asked me to write 2,000 words on why Andrew Tate wears such tight pants. I submitted 3,700. They asked if I really needed to start with a story about the industrial revolution and I said "yes, absolutely don't cut."

It's not hyperbolic to say that Americorps provided the launching point for my entire career. There are precious few ways into Conservation as a career and the training and experiencr of a year of service cannot be overstated as a way to get your foot in the door.

#handsoff In Athens, GA. It was a modest crowd compared to some I've seen posted today, but still great to see people coming out!

Quote "To be clear, none of these individuals were operational firefighters."

Yeah. That's simply incorrect. While "fire shop" jobs have (for now) been untouched, the layoffs I've seen have included individuals who were firefighters in all but job title. 1/

I just finished WE CALLED THEM GIANTS and I absolutely adored it. I was a bit taken by surprise when it ended, somehow I'd gotten into my head that there would be more, but I'm trying to enjoy more one-and-done storied lately and this was an excellent example of a story that reached a good end.
I write comics. These are my current ones. THE POWER FANTASY with Caspar Wijngaard is an ongoing book, and the link below is an introduction thread. Issues out monthly, first trade end of January. WE CALLED THEM GIANTS is my new graphic novel with Stephanie Hans, out now.
