The best shows to watch after finishing ‘The Morning Show’ Season 4
The best shows to watch after finishing ‘The Morning Show’ Season 4
If you want more high stakes storytelling and complicated relationships, these shows deliver. I’ve watched almost every season of “The Morning Show ” with my wife, and it’s one of those shows we always talk about afterward. And with Season 4 wrapping up on Wednesday, Nov. 19 on Apple TV , we’re already thinking about what to watch next. Luckily, there are a few other shows that scratch the same itch. Some are about media. Some are about power. Some are about secrets and people fighting to keep their lives from falling apart. But all should give you that same exhilarating feeling of being inside the room when the sh—er, crap, goes down. Here are the four shows you should check out after finishing Season 4 of “The Morning Show.” The Morning Show November 1, 2019 A behind-the-scenes look at the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning, exploring the unique challenges faced by the men and women who carry out this daily televised ritual. Loved ‘The Morning Show ’? Watch: ‘The Newsroom ’ “The Newsroom ” feels like stepping into another version of the same world. It’s fast. It’s passionate. And it’s all about what happens when people try to hold onto their integrity while the rest of the media machine keeps pulling them in the opposite direction. Jeff Daniels plays Will McAvoy, a cable news anchor who’s trying to rebuild his show into something that actually stands for something. He’s surrounded by a newsroom full of people who care about journalism, even when the job keeps beating them up. What makes it work is the energy. There’s a rush to it that reminds me of the best parts of “The Morning Show.” It’s not as dark and messy. It’s more idealistic. More hopeful. But the stakes still feel real. There are big speeches, tough calls, and characters who want to do the right thing even when it costs them. If you loved the urgency and behind-the-scenes drama of “The Morning Show,” this one’s an easy next watch. The Newsroom June 24, 2012 A behind-the-scenes look at the people who make a nightly cable-news program. Focusing on a network anchor, his new executive producer, the newsroom staff and their boss, the series tracks their quixotic mission to do the news well in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles-not to mention their own personal entanglements. Live 4 HBO directv.com 5-Day Trial DIRECTV Entertainment + HBO $99.99 / month hulu.com Free 3-Day Trial Hulu Live TV $97.99 / month Show More dish.com Save $370 Dish $91.99 / month tv.youtube.com Sign Up YouTube TV $99.99 / month Loading… Try out: ‘Succession ’ “Succession ” is a different flavor of media chaos, but the energy is just as addictive. It’s about the Roy family, a group of billionaires who own a massive media empire and spend almost every day plotting against each other. The show is sharp. Mean. Very funny in that uncomfortable way where you laugh and immediately think… should I have laughed at that? Where it overlaps with “The Morning Show” is the power struggle. Both shows are obsessed with the executive side of media. The deals. The betrayals. The constant maneuvering. And while “Succession” leans way harder into satire, the emotional core still hits. These characters are trying to win, but they’re also trying to be seen, usually by their father, Logan Roy. It’s messy in a way that feels real. If you liked the boardroom scenes and the complicated relationships in “The Morning Show,” you’ll have a blast with the Roys. Just maybe don’t look to them for moral guidance. Succession June 3, 2018 Follow the lives of the Roy family as they contemplate their future once their aging father begins to step back from the media and entertainment conglomerate they control. Live 4 HBO directv.com 5-Day Trial DIRECTV Entertainment + HBO $99.99 / month hulu.com Free 3-Day Trial Hulu Live TV $97.99 / month Show More dish.com Save $370 Dish $91.99 / month tv.youtube.com Sign Up YouTube TV $99.99 / month Loading… Watch next: ‘Anatomy of a Scandal ’ “Anatomy of a Scandal ” goes right for the pressure points. It’s a tight, six-episode series that drops you into the middle of a high-profile political scandal and never lets up. The story centers on Sophie, whose husband is accused of something that blows their entire life apart. The show mixes courtroom tension with personal fallout, and you’re never quite sure who’s telling the truth or how far the consequences will ripple. If you connected with the way “The Morning Show” handled scandal and accountability, this one delivers that same emotional intensity. It’s not a media series. It’s more psychological, more claustrophobic, but still digs into the themes of power, trust, and what people choose to believe. The whole thing moves fast, and when it hits, it really hits. Anatomy of a Scandal April 15, 2022 Sophie’s privileged life as the wife of powerful politician James unravels when scandalous secrets surface — and he stands accused of a shocking crime. Wild card pick: ‘The Beast in Me ’ “The Beast in Me ” is the newest and darkest show on this list, but it earns its spot. Claire Danes plays Aggie, a grieving novelist whose life unravels when a charming new neighbor moves in next door. She starts to suspect he’s hiding something. Something dangerous. And once she starts digging, the whole story becomes a slow-burning psychological chess match. This one works well after “The Morning Show” because it’s character-driven. It’s about a woman who refuses to look away from the truth, even when it starts to cost her. There’s a mystery here, sure. But the tension mostly comes from watching two characters circle each other while you try to figure out who’s lying. It’s unsettling in a good way. And if you enjoy dramas where powerful men aren’t as harmless as they pretend to be, you’ll click with this one right away. The Beast in Me November 13, 2025 A grieving author, becomes obsessed with her new real estate mogul neighbor, Nile Sheldon, who was previously a prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance, finding a new purpose in investigating him. More to watch after finishing ‘The Morning Show ’: ‘Flack ’ | Prime Video Flack February 21, 2019 Robyn, the sharp and witty publicity maven, is an expert at her craft but a complete self-saboteur when it comes to her personal life. Robyn’s work as a crisis PR strategist is fast-paced and unpredictable, as she counsels high-profile personalities in entertainment, fashion and sports. ‘Press ’ | Peacock Press September 6, 2018 The lives of the editors and journalists working at a left-leaning broadsheet and a populist tabloid. ‘Your Friends and Neighbors ’ | Apple TV Your Friends & Neighbors April 10, 2025 When a financial titan suddenly finds himself divorced and jobless, he starts robbing his wealthy neighbors to stay afloat. Stealing from his own social circle strangely exhilarates him—but he gradually gets tangled in a deadly web. ‘The West Wing ’ | HBO Max The West Wing September 22, 1999 The West Wing provides a glimpse into presidential politics in the nation’s capital as it tells the stories of the members of a fictional presidential administration. These interesting characters have humor and dedication that touches the heart while the politics that they discuss touch on everyday life. Will YouTube TV pay you $60 to come back?
Will YouTube TV pay you $60 to come back?
Some departed users are reporting receiving promotional offers to return to YouTube TV for a $60 discount off their first month of service. Disney-owned channels were blacked out on YouTube TV for two weeks at the start of November. The channels have now been restored , but there has already been plenty of damage done to YouTube TV in terms of subscriber defections. Since the streamer doesn’t regularly share subscriber totals, we won’t know precisely how many viewers canceled their subscriptions thanks to the Disney dispute, but there obviously were some. On Monday, some of those departed YouTube TV customers reported they were getting offers from the service to return with a steep discount off their first month of service. Key Details: Want to save some money?: YouTube TV is offering some former customers $60 off their first month to come back. Not a blanket offer: The $60 discount has not been offered to 100% of past YouTube TV customers. It’s something: Customers who did not cancel can still take advantage of YouTube TV’s $20 credit offer. Sign Up $82.99+ / month tv.youtube.com Reddit user sdiori and others report that they have received offers to return to YouTube TV after canceling, and can take advantage of a $60 discount off their first month of service if they do come back. That discount will lower the price of one month of YouTube TV to $23. Other users who reported that they had threatened to cancel got an offer for $10 off their bill for their next six months, also totaling up to a savings of $60. Still others who canceled say they haven’t gotten any promotional offer at all yet, so it appears, at the very least, YouTube TV is distributing the discount on a rolling basis. Those who did not cancel their YouTube TV subscriptions, or threaten to do so, can still claim a $20 credit off their next monthly bill. YouTube TV first pledged when it entered the dispute with Disney that it would give all customers such a credit if a blackout restricted access to the channels for an extended period of time, and first began informing customers it would give out this credit on Nov. 10. A survey taken during the dispute found that nearly 25% of YouTube TV subscribers at least considered canceling their subscription during the Disney blackout, so the cancellation reaction may have been substantial. Offering a discount of more than 70% off one month of service to departing customers is another indication that YouTube TV may have suffered a large defection of subscribers. AMC circling TNA Wrestling broadcast rights
AMC circling TNA Wrestling broadcast rights
A&E and The CW have also been reported as potential landing spots for the wrestling promotion. Is TNA Wrestling ready for the spotlight? A new report on the details of the wrestling promotion’s pursuit of its next media partner indicates that TNA is indeed ready to step up to a new level of distribution, and that it has attracted interest from AMC and other linear channels with much larger footprints than its current TV home. Key Details: Your name in lights: AMC has shown interest in acquiring TNA’s media rights. Double it!: A move to AMC could double TNA’s prospective audience size. Other parties circling: Previous reports indicate A&E and The CW have also shown some level of interest. Coming Soon $9.99+ / month TNAwrestling.com As reported by SI , AMC has emerged as another interested party in the pursuit of TNA’s broadcast rights. Currently, TNA events are distributed on AXS TV and TNA+ , but the promotion is looking to increase the value of its next media contract. AMC would give TNA Wrestling a potentially big jump in reach. SI reports that AXS TV had an estimated footprint of 30 million homes as of 2023, whereas AMC was available in approximately twice that number of households. TNA could also share some of its streaming rights with AMC for distribution on AMC+, if it desired. But that may not be in the cards, given that TNA also has a direct-to-consumer service called TNA+ . Other interested parties in TNA Wrestling include A&E and The CW , so the wrestling promotion has some options to work through. The right partnership could vault TNA to a new level of cultural relevance, whereas making the wrong choice could leave it staring up at the likes of WWE and AEW forever. TNA has had a bit of a resurgence recently following a creative partnership with the WWE that has seen TNA stars appear on “NXT” broadcasts and Premium Live Events, and vice versa. Sources told SI that TNA’s next deal would include more live shows, though it was not indicated if it wants its slate to be fully live. TNA certainly faces competition for the eyeballs of wrestling fans; AEW struck a deal with Prime Video to stream pay-per-view events earlier this year, and also partners with HBO Max to offer on-demand streams of many of its shows. The biggest fish in the pro wrestling pond will also have a new distribution partner as of next year. WWE will stream premium live events on ESPN ’s new streaming service starting in 2026, so TNA has a ways to go before it’s ready to stand on par with the giants in the business. However, TNA is looking to take the next step in media distribution, and AMC could be a viable partner to make that happen. 7-Day Trial amc+ via amazon.com AMC+ AMC+ is a premium subscription streaming bundle owned by AMC Networks. Disney's injunction request against Sling Passes denied
Disney's injunction request against Sling Passes denied
The decision means that Sling can continue to sell short-term access to its Orange package while lawsuits continue. Sling TV ’s legal team is earning its retainer. On Wednesday, Sling announced a major legal win in its fight to continue offering its Passes program. Sling’s Day, Weekend, and Week Passes allow viewers to sign up and watch its Orange package for a limited window, but the launch of this product made programmers hopping mad. Disney sued to try to put a stop to the sale of Sling’s Passes, but a federal court has denied Disney’s request for a preliminary injunction to halt their distribution. Key Details: No need to stop: A court ruling means Sling TV can continue to sell its Passes. Case continues: Disney says it is still looking forward to proving its claims in court. Price drop: . Get 50% OFF $4.99+ / month sling.com Limited time: Get 50% OFF your first month of Sling TV On Monday, U.S. District Court judge Arun Subramanian denied Disney’s motion for a preliminary injunction to stop the sale of Sling’s Passes. Disney first filed its lawsuit in August, saying that Sling did not seek its consent to offer ESPN and other Disney-owned channels in its limited-time subscription packages. Judge Subramanian ruled that Disney had not demonstrated a likelihood of succeeding on the merits of its breach-of-contract claims against Sling TV. He ruled that Disney’s distribution agreement with Sling’s parent company DISH does not define a minimum subscription length. The judge also ruled that Disney failed to show that it would suffer irreparable harm if its requests for injunctive relief were not granted. Additionally, Disney could not show that an injunction “is in the public interest or that the balance of equities favors an injunction. To celebrate the big court win, Sling TV is offering subscribers a Day Pass for only $1 each, an 80% discount off the regular $5 daily price. Sling is offering this discounted rate on a Day Pass until Nov. 30. “The court’s decision is a win for consumers and a validation of what Sling stands for,” Sling SVP Seth Van Sickel said in a statement. “For too long, traditional ‘big media’ companies have intentionally stifled innovation and forced customers to pay for more content than they want or need. We believe customers deserve the flexibility to stream the content they want, whenever they want it, at a price they can afford. Consumers deserve affordable TV, not bound by long-term contracts or bloated offerings. The $1 Day Pass is our way of saying thank you to the customers we fight for every day.” Warner Bros. Discovery also filed a lawsuit against Sling over Passes, and like Disney, is seeking a preliminary injunction to stop the distribution of the product. But given the broad nature of the judge’s ruling against Disney, WBD seems unlikely to succeed in its attempts. The case against Sling TV’s Passes is not over, even though Disney’s request for a preliminary injunction has not been granted. In a statement sent to Variety , Disney said it “look[s] forward to vindicating our position at trial where all the facts and evidence will be presented.” Get 50% OFF sling.com Sling TV Sling TV is The Streamable’s choice for cord cutters on a budget. ESPN completes its purchase of MLB.TV
ESPN completes its purchase of MLB.TV
Viewers will henceforward be able to watch out-of-market MLB games through ESPN platforms like the ESPN Unlimited service. It’s been quite a year for shuffling top sports properties through ESPN. The sports-first network has suffered one major loss, as it saw UFC fights depart for Paramount starting in 2026. But it has gained big-name events as well, signing a deal with WWE to stream its premium live events on the ESPN direct-to-consumer service. ESPN has been working toward a deal to acquire all out-of-market MLB broadcasts through the MLB.TV service, and a new report indicates that the deal is now finalized. Key Details: Batter up!: ESPN has completed its deal to acquire MLB.TV. Not for you: MLB.TV will not be integrated into YouTube TV, as other ESPN streaming content will be. What’s the hold up?: MLB still hasn’t officially announced broadcast deals with partners for ESPN’s old package of games. Sign up $12.99+ / month espn.com John Ourand of Puck News is reporting that ESPN has finalized its deal to acquire MLB.TV, even though the agreement has not yet been announced. MLB has been shopping its out-of-market games service for months, and ESPN has shown consistent interest. It can use the geo-targeting tech on the ESPN app to ensure that viewers can access all out-of-market contests available in their area, just like they can with the NHL Power Play out-of-market platform on ESPN Select. It’s not yet clear whether viewers will have to continue paying an additional fee for MLB.TV once it’s integrated into ESPN. Last season, MLB.TV cost $150 to watch all out-of-market games throughout the season, but ESPN doesn’t charge any additional fee for access to out-of-market NHL games. ESPN will be the exclusive platform to watch out-of-market MLB games, meaning that YouTube TV will not include MLB.TV content when it absorbs other sporting events from the ESPN Unlimited service . The ability to ingest ESPN content onto the YouTube TV app was a concession won by the streamer in its recent carriage fight with Disney, but MLB.TV is not coming along for the ride. MLB is likely waiting to announce its MLB.TV deal with ESPN until it can formally present its new partners for the package of games that ESPN surrendered earlier this year. It’s been months since reports indicated MLB had agreed to deals in principle with ESPN, NBC , and Netflix to divvy up the “Sunday Night Baseball” package, the Home Run Derby, and rights to wild card playoff series formerly held exclusively by the Four-Letter Network. Will you follow MLB.TV to the ESPN app? Are you fed up with the shuffling of major sports properties that are important parts of how you access games? Let us know how you feel in the comments below. For the first time, this service gives sports fans access to its full lineup of linear channels without a traditional cable or satellite subscription. … The service is available in two tiers: ESPN Select, which includes everything offered on ESPN+, such as over 32,000 live events annually, studio shows, and on-demand replays; and ESPN Unlimited, which unlocks all ESPN linear channels — including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SEC Network, ACC Network, ESPNEWS, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN on ABC — plus ESPN+ and ESPN3, totaling around 47,000 live events each year. Both plans may be purchased monthly or annually. Subscribers can enjoy extensive coverage of the NFL, NBA, MLB, college sports, UFC, soccer, tennis, and more, as well as original programming, studio shows, and “30 for 30” documentaries. Starting in 2026, the platform will become the exclusive U.S. streaming home for WWE’s premium live events, including WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Royal Rumble. NFL Network and NFL RedZone are also included through a partnership between the NFL and ESPN, adding draft coverage, preseason games, and NFL+ Premium features. The enhanced ESPN app will feature Multiview for watching multiple games simultaneously, real-time stats, betting and fantasy tools, personalized highlight reels, and even e-commerce options for tickets and merchandise. Viewers can subscribe directly or bundle ESPN Unlimited with Disney+ and Hulu for $29.99 monthly in the first year. An (action-packed) deep dive into the Prime Video movie library
An (action-packed) deep dive into the Prime Video movie library
This breaks down what Prime Video gets right, where it can grow, and why its movie lineup keeps surprising me. When it comes to streaming movies, my wife and I keep finding ourselves back on Prime Video . We’ve had it forever through our Amazon Prime subscription, but lately it’s become a much bigger part of our movie nights. And a big part of that is because Prime Video is giving us what we want and can’t really find elsewhere: big, funny action comedies. We’ve watched all of them this year, including “Playdate ,” “Heads of State ,” and “Deep Cover ” just to name a few. And it feels like every time we open the app, there’s some new Prime Original that actually looks fun. Now, I’ve always been a little overwhelmed by Prime Video’s selection and interface (more on that shortly). Unless there’s a specific movie on the platform I know I want to watch, it’s not always my first choice. But after digging deeper into the “included with Prime” catalog, I realized just how strong Prime Video’s lineup really is. Between nonstop Amazon Originals, a massive evergreen library bolstered by MGM, and a constant rotation of thrillers, comedies, action movies, and hidden gems, Prime has quietly become one of the most reliable places to stream movies. So, here’s a closer look at what Prime Video does best, where it could improve, how often new movies land, and how deep the library really goes. This is obviously my opinion, and your mileage may vary, but here’s my take. Everything you need to know about the Prime Video movie library What does it do well? What could it do more of? How often does new content drop? How deep is its library? TLDR summary TBD What movie genres does Prime Video do really well? What Prime Video does best comes down to two things: its massive library and its recent commitment to high-energy Amazon Originals. The service easily has one of the deepest movie catalogs in streaming and piles on new originals every month. Whether you want a slick action thriller, a big rom-com, a glossy musical, a crime drama, or a horror movie with teeth, there’s a good chance Prime has something fresh and free with your subscription. Action comedies and crime thrillers might be Prime’s strongest lanes right now. Just this past year, Amazon has dropped a string of slick, high-budget originals that Tara and I had a blast watching. “Playdate ,” “Heads of State ,” “Deep Cover ,” and “The Pickup ” all feel like theatrical crowd-pleasers that just happen to be free on Prime. And then there’s “Play Dirty .” It’s a gritty, twist-heavy heist thriller that follows Parker, played by Mark Wahlberg, as he tries to navigate a score gone wrong while getting squeezed by crime lords, dictators, and billionaires. LaKeith Stanfield and Rosa Salazar are great here, too. The whole thing is pulpy, muscular, and packed with double-crosses, the kind of high-stakes crime story that makes Prime’s action lineup feel alive. This is where the service is at its best. “Another Simple Favor ” is another example. It brings back the stylish, tongue-in-cheek energy of the first movie , with Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively slipping right back into their playful, suspicious dynamic. Prime seems to know this is a great lane for them and keeps doubling down on glossy, fashionable thrillers that go down easily. Rom-coms are another sweet spot. Prime has built up a strong lineup of originals and cozy rewatches, especially around the holidays. “EXmas ” is a good example of how the service leans into that warm Christmas vibe. You also get glossy studio rom-coms like “Moonstruck ” and “The Family Stone ”, which always hit the spot. And Prime has leaned into modern comfort watches, too. Stuff like “Something From Tiffany’s ”, “Picture This ”, and “Puppy Love ” keeps the lineup feeling fresh whether you want a holiday movie-of-the-week or a bigger studio classic. Prime Video’s drama lineup is no slouch either. Amazon Studios has built a strong reputation here with films like “Air ” and “The Burial.” These are smart, polished adult dramas that have become rare in theaters. And Amazon has the prestige titles too. “Manchester by the Sea ” and “Sound of Metal ” are both Oscar winners streaming right now. And then you have horror, a category Prime has been quietly dominating for years. The service has one of the widest horror catalogs around, mixing cult classics, international favorites, slasher staples, and new originals. Blumhouse has been a huge part of that, giving Prime exclusives like “Totally Killer ” and festival hits like “Nanny .” You also get iconic titles like “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre ” and “Let the Right One In .” And now Prime’s loading up on buzzy new drops too, with “Terrifier ,” “Speak No Evil ,” “Nosferatu ,” and “The Woman in the Yard ” all showing up on the page right now. I’m not a big horror guy, but it’s clear to me just how deep this part of the library is, and not just with filler. What movie genres could Prime Video do more of? If there’s one area where I’d love to see Prime Video grow, it’s in family-friendly movies. The library has some good picks, but it’s not nearly as stacked as Disney+ or Netflix when it comes to big animated releases and iconic kids’ franchises. I’d love to see more original family comedies or animated projects that feel like genuine Prime exclusives and not just licensed drops that rotate in and out. Prime could also go deeper into original comedies. Yes, they’re pumping out action comedies, and I so appreciate it, and the service has winners like “Ricky Stanicky ,” but I’d love to see more mid-budget comedies and rom-coms that feel tailored for streaming. Movies that are smart, funny, and have the same kind of charm as Prime’s bigger hits. This is a space where Prime already shows promise; it just needs more of it. Finally, on a personal note, I don’t love Prime’s interface. I never quite know what’s going to surface, and I sometimes have to dig to find the movie I actually want to watch. Plus, Prime Video surfaces movies (and TV shows) that aren’t included free with your Prime subscription, so at first glance, it seems like you’re getting a lot more than you actually are. It’s not a huge issue, but it’s something to keep an eye on as you’re browsing their library. How often do new movies drop on Prime Video? Prime Video updates its movie library constantly. Each month, dozens of new movies land on the platform, split between Amazon Originals and licensed titles. The best part is how frequently high-profile movies arrive free for Prime members. One week it might be a big studio thriller like “Play Dirty ,” the next week it’s an action comedy like “Playdate”, and the week after that it’s a new Amazon Studios drama. Recent Prime Originals like “Playdate ,” “Deep Cover ,” and “The Pickup ” show just how active Prime has become. And when you mix those with licensed arrivals like “Spider-Man: Homecoming ,” “Migration ,” “Child’s Play ,” “Hot Pursuit ,” “Annie Hall ,” and “The Man From U.N.C.L.E. ,” the lineup feels new almost every week. Now, the volume can sometimes feel overwhelming, but that’s a good problem to have for a streamer. And I have noticed the recent Prime Originals have been getting pushed up to the surface, so I’m missing a lot less of them than I used to. How deep is Prime Video’s movie library? The depth of Prime Video ’s movie library is where the service really stands out. Thanks to the MGM acquisition, Prime now owns one of the richest film libraries in the world. That gives subscribers access to decades of iconic movies, from Oscar winners to cult classics to foundational Hollywood favorites. First, there’s the wildly valuable “James Bond ” IP. If you care about blockbuster franchises, this is the crown jewel of the MGM deal. Prime is now the streaming home for almost the entire James Bond saga, which means every era of 007 is right there waiting for you. You can jump into the Daniel Craig run with “No Time To Die ,” “Spectre ,” “Skyfall ,” “Quantum of Solace ,” and “Casino Royale .” You also get the Pierce Brosnan era, including “GoldenEye ,” “Tomorrow Never Dies ,” “The World Is Not Enough ,” and “Die Another Day .” Then there is the classic run. “Dr. No ,” “From Russia with Love ,” “Goldfinger ,” “Thunderball ,” “You Only Live Twice ,” “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service ,” “Diamonds Are Forever ,” “Live and Let Die ,” “The Man with the Golden Gun ,” “The Spy Who Loved Me ,” “Moonraker ,” “For Your Eyes Only ,” “Octopussy ,” “A View to a Kill ,” “The Living Daylights ,” and “Licence to Kill .” If you want the full Bond experience, Prime is the place. No hunting across four different apps. It’s all lined up in one giant run through spy-movie history. Beyond Bond, the MGM library adds real depth to Prime’s catalog. You can see the influence right away in the classics and cult favorites now sitting in the service. Stuff like “Thief ” gives Prime a piece of crime-movie history. “Yentl ” adds prestige and awards pedigree. You get genre landmarks like “Legend ,” comedies like “UHF ” and “Uncle Buck ,” and horror favorites like “Sleepaway Camp ” and its sequels. There is also a healthy selection of deep-cut dramas and thrillers. “The Whistle Blower ,” “The First Power ,” and “The Missouri Breaks ” give the library a real sense of range. Even something like “The Bear ” has an old-school, big-studio craftsmanship you do not see much anymore. Put it all together, and the MGM catalog fills in the gaps that other streaming services leave open. Prime gets the prestige, the cult hits, the genre pillars, and the kind of mid-budget Hollywood films that have almost vanished from new release slates. Prime also fills out its library with classic movies and franchises that sit outside the MGM deal but still deserve attention. The “Indiana Jones” films are the clearest example, with all three original movies giving the service a burst of old-school adventure. You also get Woody Allen’s “The Purple Rose of Cairo ,” which adds a different kind of cinematic pedigree. Nicolas Cage fans will spot “Vampire’s Kiss ,” a cult oddity that always finds a new audience. There are genre favorites like “Exorcist III ,” “Hell Squad ,” and the Cannon-era action throwback “Attack Force Z .” Even lighter picks like “Uncle Buck ” and “Yellowbeard ” round things out. These movies are not part of the MGM acquisition. They’re simply smart catalog additions that help Prime feel bigger, older, stranger, and more complete. Prime Video also shines when you look at its Bollywood lineup. It’s one of the deepest collections you’ll find on any major streamer, and the variety is wild in a good way. You get absolute classics like “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai ” and “Dil Chahta Hai ,” which still hit as hard today as they did when they came out. You also get newer favorites like “Section 375 ,” the sunny nostalgia of “Maine Pyaar Kiya ,” and stylish comedies like “Singh Is Kinng .” And if you want something with a little more heft, Prime Video has you covered with titles like “Kaashi in Search of Ganga ” and the international award-winner “Joyland.” It’s a great section to browse when you want big emotion, big stars, and big filmmaking you won’t always find on other U.S. platforms. And with the holiday season around the corner, Prime Video has leaned hard into the Christmas spirit. The service has the heavy hitters people search for every year, like “How the Grinch Stole Christmas ” and the timeless classic “It’s a Wonderful Life .” You also get modern originals like “Candy Cane Lane ” and the big holiday adventure “Red One ,” which give Prime its own signature seasonal hits. The lineup keeps growing. “Tyler Perry’s Finding Joy ” brings family energy. “EXmas ” brings chaos and laughs. And “Something From Tiffany’s ” delivers a warm, cozy rom-com glow that fits perfectly this time of year. It’s a strong mix of classics, originals, and easy holiday rewatches, all sitting in one place. Too long didn’t read summary Prime Video has become one of the most versatile movie libraries in streaming. You get a steady flow of new originals, a deep MGM library, and a huge range of genres, including a surprisingly strong global and Bollywood lineup. The interface can be confusing, and the family section could grow, but the overall catalog is big, varied, and always getting updated. If you want one service that covers a little of everything, Prime Video delivers. 30-Day Trial amazon.com Prime Video Prime Video is a subscription video streaming service that includes on-demand access to 10,000+ movies, TV shows, and Prime Originals like “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” “Jack Ryan,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “The Boys,” and more. Ready to go full holiday season vibes? Watch these holiday rom-coms first
Ready to go full holiday season vibes? Watch these holiday rom-coms first
Each movie delivers the warmth, charm, and feel-good energy that makes this time of year so fun to watch. With Halloween behind us and Thanksgiving ahead, it’s time to truly embrace the holiday season. And for my wife and me, that means one thing. Romantic comedies. We watch them all year, but the holidays are the coziest time to settle in with something warm, sweet, and guaranteed to end well. So I pulled together a list of the top seven holiday rom-com movies you can stream right now. A few are modern favorites. A few are undeniable classics. But all of them deliver that comforting holiday feeling we look forward to every year. Top 7 holiday romantic comedy movies on streaming right now No. 7: ‘Single All the Way’ No. 6: ‘Love Hard’ No. 5: ‘Just Friends’ No. 4: ‘Last Holiday’ No. 3: ‘Serendipity’ No. 2: ‘Love Actually’ No. 1: ‘The Holiday’ No. 7: ‘Single All the Way’ (2021) | Netflix “Single All the Way ” is one of the few newer holiday rom-coms that actually works. The movie follows Peter, played by Michael Urie, who brings his best friend Nick home for Christmas to avoid another round of questions about being single. His mom sets him up on a blind date, but the trip sparks old feelings between Peter and Nick that neither of them can ignore. Jennifer Coolidge shows up as the aunt who steals every scene. The whole thing is warm, funny, and effortless in a way so many newer holiday movies are not. My wife and I watched it when it came out, and both agreed it deserved way more love than it got. Single All the Way December 2, 2021 Desperate to avoid his family’s judgment about his perpetual single status, Peter convinces his best friend Nick to join him for the holidays and pretend that they’re now in a relationship. But when Peter’s mother sets him up on a blind date with her handsome trainer James, the plan goes awry. Loading… No. 6: ‘Love Hard’ (2021) | Netflix “Love Hard ” is a modern holiday rom-com that leans into online dating chaos. Nina Dobrev plays Natalie, a writer who travels across the country to surprise a guy she has been talking to on a dating app. When she arrives, she discovers she has been catfished by Josh, played by Jimmy O. Yang. Josh strikes a deal. Pretend to be his girlfriend for Christmas, and he will introduce her to the guy from his photos. The movie is light, funny, and built around really good chemistry. Love Hard November 5, 2021 An LA girl, unlucky in love, falls for an East Coast guy on a dating app and decides to surprise him for Christmas, only to discover that she’s been catfished. But the object of her affection actually lives in the same town, and the guy who duped her offers to set them up if she pretends to be his own girlfriend for the holidays. Loading… No. 5: ‘Just Friends’ (2005) | Rent with Prime Video “Just Friends ” is pure holiday chaos wrapped in a romantic comedy and is maybe the funniest movie on this list. It follows Chris Brander, played by Ryan Reynolds, who comes home for Christmas after years of transforming from an awkward high school kid into a successful music executive. He reconnects with his childhood best friend Jamie, played by Amy Smart, and tries to turn their old friendship into something more. Then there’s Anna Faris, who steals every scene as a completely unhinged pop star who keeps derailing his plans. It is loud and ridiculous, but it has a real heart under the slapstick. If you grew up in the early 2000s, this one hits a very specific nostalgia button. Just Friends November 23, 2005 While visiting his hometown during Christmas, a man comes face-to-face with his old high school crush whom he was best friends with – a woman whose rejection of him turned him into a ferocious womanizer. Loading… No. 4: ‘Last Holiday’ (2006) | Paramount+ Queen Latifah shines in “Last Holiday .” She plays Georgia Byrd, a woman who works in a department store and keeps her dreams tucked away in a journal. After she is mistakenly told she has only weeks to live, she decides to spend the holidays on a luxurious trip to Europe. That choice changes her life in ways she never expected, including a romantic spark with a coworker played by LL Cool J. The movie is sweet, funny, and full of heart, and for my money is quietly one of the best feel-good holiday movies out there. Last Holiday January 13, 2006 The discovery that she has a terminal illness prompts introverted department store saleswoman Georgia Byrd to reflect on what she realizes has been an overly cautious life. With weeks to live, she withdraws her life savings, sells all her possessions and jets off to Europe where she lives it up at a posh hotel. Upbeat and passionate, Georgia charms everybody she meets, including renowned Chef Didier. The only one missing from her new life is her longtime crush Sean Matthews. Loading… No. 3: ‘Serendipity’ (2001) | STARZ “Serendipity ” is a holiday romance at its most magical. The movie follows Jonathan and Sara, played by John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale, who meet during the Christmas season in New York. A single night together sparks something real, but they let fate decide if they are meant to reconnect. The story jumps between snowy city streets, ice skating rinks, and one near-miss after another. Few movies capture that warm holiday feeling better than this one. It is charming, cozy, and the perfect holiday watch. Serendipity October 5, 2001 Although strangers Sara and Jonathan are both already in relationships, they realize they have genuine chemistry after a chance encounter – but part company soon after. Years later, they each yearn to reunite, despite being destined for the altar. But to give true love a chance, they have to find one another again. Loading… No. 2: ‘Love Actually’ (2003) | Peacock “Love Actually ” is still the gold standard for holiday romantic comedies. The movie weaves together a collection of love stories set in London during the Christmas season. Some are sweet. Some are heartbreaking. All of them hit in the right way. The cast is stacked with Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley, Colin Firth, and more. It was a massive box office hit when it opened and has only grown in popularity since. Every year, my wife and I swear we are going to try something new, but we still end up putting this on. It is hard to beat. Love Actually September 7, 2003 Eight very different couples deal with their love lives in various loosely interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London. Loading… No. 1: ‘The Holiday’ (2006) | Rent with Prime Video “The Holiday ” sits at the top of my list for a reason. The movie follows two women. Iris, played by Kate Winslet, and Amanda, played by Cameron Diaz. Both are heartbroken and desperate for a change. They swap homes for Christmas and find themselves falling into new romances. Iris meets a warmhearted composer played by Jack Black. Amanda falls for a charming widower played by Jude Law. All the while, Nancy Meyers brings her signature style: beautiful houses, comforting holiday settings, and all the tropes you want from this kind of movie. My wife and I rewatch this one every year for the simple reason that it has everything we want from a holiday rom-com and then some. The Holiday December 5, 2006 Two women, one American and one British, swap homes at Christmastime following bad breakups. Each woman finds romance with a local man but realizes that the imminent return home may end the relationship. Loading…

Disney-owned channels coming to new YouTube TV genre packs
Disney-owned channels coming to new YouTube TV genre packs
Its new carriage deal with YouTube TV allows the streamer to use Disney-owned channels in new genre packs, and YouTube TV will almost certainly take advantage. The dust is still settling on one of the most severe carriage disputes in recent memory. For the first two weeks of November, YouTube TV customers could not watch Disney-owned channels thanks to a blackout caused by the dispute, but a deal was finally reached on Friday night. Disney included a key provision in the deal with YouTube TV: the right to create new genre-based channel packages. That may be seen as a concession by Disney for now, but it could be a huge help in its future aspirations. Key Details: Go ahead: YouTube TV can use Disney-owned channels to create genre packs going forward. Following DIRECTV: Disney first gave DIRECTV permission to create genre-based plans in 2024. Marketplace equity: Allowing competitors to create genre-based plans could help Disney in its merger with Fubo. 7-Day Free Trial $14.99+ / month fubo.tv Get Your First Month of Fubo for Only $74.99 (normally $95) after your Free Trial. Disney specifically announced in its press release regarding the new carriage contract with YouTube TV that it was giving that streamer permission to use some of its channels in “various genre-specific packages.” While it didn’t specify which channels were embraced by the agreement, it’s almost certain that popular networks like ABC , ESPN , and FX are among them. We’ve already seen the result of one company’s experiments with such genre-based channel packages. In September 2024, DIRECTV became the first distributor to get Disney’s approval to craft such products, and has since launched packages like the MyKids, MySports, and MyEntertainment plans at prices starting at $20 per month — far less than the standard cable channel plan. It remains to be seen what kind of packages YouTube TV creates with these channels, but it stands to reason that they’d at least resemble those offered by YouTube TV. There’s lots of potential for YouTube TV to get creative, however, and innovation is part of the reason the streamer has grown to over 10 million customers. Making these channels available in genre packs could be a shrewd move on Disney’s part as it looks toward a merger of its Hulu + Live TV service with Fubo . That transaction requires the approval of regulators , and if Disney were planning to launch a host of genre-based packages of its own once that merger is complete, it would quickly find itself in hot legal water if competing streamers weren’t allowed to use its channels to do likewise. Instead, YouTube TV will likely be bringing new, genre-based channel plans to customers in the coming months. There’s been no official announcement to that effect from the streamer, but it wouldn’t have gotten that provision from Disney if it didn’t intend to use it, and customers should expect to see it bear fruit before too long. Can you download shows and movies with YouTube TV?
Most live TV streamers don’t allow for TV or movie downloads. What about YouTube TV? By and large, live TV streaming services don’t offer the ability to download TV shows and movies for offline viewing. That feature is typically reserved for on-demand streaming services, which have more original content and are generally easier to use offline. YouTube TV has made its way in the live TV streaming world by doing things somewhat differently than other services, however. What about downloads? Sinclair buys stake in Scripps; is new sports giant coming?
Sinclair buys stake in Scripps; is new sports giant coming?
A combination of Scripps and Sinclair would unite Ion and Tennis Channel under the same corporate banner. Sinclair Broadcast Group is looking to make some moves in the local broadcast channel marketplace. In a new filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Sinclair declared that it had purchased an 8.2% equity stake in E.W. Scripps, another company that owns local TV stations across the United States. The move could presage a larger pursuit of Scripps by Sinclair, which could lead to the creation of a sports broadcast giant. Key Details: Partners: Sinclair has purchased an 8.2% equity stake in Scripps. Sports galore: Should Sinclair acquire Scripps fully, the resulting company would control Ion and Tennis Channel. Approval needed: Regulators would have to ensure a merger wouldn’t run afoul. Sinclair reportedly has an interest in acquiring 100% of Scripps if possible, and its purchase of an 8.2% stake could be just the first step in the process. In its filing with the SEC, Sinclair says the two sides have “engaged in constructive discussions for several months” about the possibility of combining. A full merger may never come to pass, but if it does, it would create a company that has a huge reach. It would add 60 stations to Sinclair’s inventory of 178, and could potentially make a powerful new sports distribution company with a wide range of popular events. Sinclair owns Tennis Channel , while Scripps is in control of Ion — which offers NWSL and WNBA games, the Big Sky conference, and local rights to the Florida Panthers , Vegas Golden Knights , Utah Mammoth , and Tampa Bay Lightning . Bringing the two together could be an incentive for more pro teams to license their local rights to the new company and present other opportunities for sports programming enhancements. Regulators would have to approve the deal, and U.S. law prohibits any single owner from controlling stations that reach more than 39% of U.S. households. Federal Communications Commission chairman Brendan Carr has spoken of his desire to have those rules loosened, but critics of that proposal have pushed back against what they see as reduced choice in local TV news perspectives. The merger and acquisition winds are blowing all over the entertainment world, and Sinclair is just the latest company to show interest in a major purchase. Will it succeed in its pursuit of Scripps? Viewers love choice, but still struggle with content discovery
Viewers love choice, but still struggle with content discovery
New data from Hub Research shows that audiences will often turn to YouTube if they can’t find something to stream on a subscription. How are viewers deciding what to watch next, especially in an age of bundled content where multiple streaming services are packaged together? That’s what Hub Research’s annual “Conquering Content” study seeks to answer. The survey found that while people do enjoy the additional choice they have with getting access to more content, they still struggle with content discovery at times. Key Details: Looking backward: Sixty percent of new favorite shows discovered in the past year are older titles. Why that one?: Less than half of viewers say they see recommendations for shows they actually like. Going elsewhere: When viewers don’t find something to watch, they often turn to YouTube instead. Sign Up Now $11.99+ / month disneyplus.com Get Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ for just $16.99 a month ($14 savings). Combo options like the Disney Bundle or the new package of Apple TV and Peacock are giving viewers access to big libraries of content at discounted prices. Viewers are finding new favorites in this manner, but most often these titles are not shows that have released their first seasons in the past year. Hub’s survey found that 60% of customers identified an older show that already has multiple seasons available to stream as their new favorite series, as opposed to a recently released show that was currently unfolding or just one season already out. Among young people, this trend is even more pronounced; 65% of viewers age 16 to 34 say their new favorite show is an older release with lots of episodes to binge. Click chart to expand. Unfortunately, recommendation algorithms aren’t quite keeping up with viewer expectations as they look to new interests. Only 46% of subscribers say that recommendations offer them shows they like, whether they be new shows, original content, or licensed titles, versus 54% who say that recommendations only promote new titles from that particular streamer. Click chart to expand. That leaves streamers with an age-old problem of keeping subscribers engaged with their services. Bundles help alleviate this problem somewhat; audiences are more incentivized to find a new title in a bundled product, since canceling one service within the bundle means they have to cancel all. Still, streamers should take steps to encourage viewers to stay around by tweaking their content recommendation algorithms unless they want to lose viewership to YouTube. Hub’s data found that nearly 8 out of 10 people who use YouTube say they turn to that platform at least some of the time when they can’t find something to watch on their favorite streamers. That number jumps to 90% among viewers 16 to 34. Click chart to expand. “With so many choices, matching viewers to programs that fit their taste and mood continues to be one of the toughest tasks for TV providers,” Hub senior consultant Jason Platt Zolov said. “But viewers love having tons of options and lean into old favorites as a way to keep watching until a new hit breaks through. Streamers that deliver a balance of those old gems with well-timed exclusive new content will breed the strongest loyalties from viewers.” Sign Up disneyplus.com Disney+ Disney+ is a video streaming service with over 13,000 series and films from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, The Muppets, and more. NFL raises viewership for broadcast TV, streaming in October
NFL raises viewership for broadcast TV, streaming in October
Streamers that offer NFL games saw a clear halo effect during the month, according to Nielsen’s ratings. The NFL is, quite predictably, asserting its ratings dominance once again this fall. That’s the overall takeaway from Nielsen’s The Gauge report for October, which showed that NFL viewership is driving a continued resurgence of broadcast TV viewing, as well as creating a noticeable spillover audience for streaming services that carry NFL games Key Details: Broadcast rises: Broadcast viewing jumped again in October, and reached over 27% of viewing on Sundays. Streaming gains: Paramount+, Peacock, and Prime Video all saw viewership increase thanks to the NFL as well. Cable bright spot: Cable sports viewership increased nearly 50% over September. 30-Day Free Trial $8.99+ / month amazon.com Per Nielsen’s data, broadcast viewership grew 4.3% over September, which was also an impressive month for that source . In total, broadcast viewership accounted for 22.9% of all TV watched during the month of October, up from 22.3% last month. When narrowed down to Sundays only, broadcast viewership accounts for an even higher percentage of all TV watched — 27.3%. Cable and streaming both show markedly lower viewership on Sundays, demonstrating how popular football is on Sunday afternoons. Click to expand chart to full-size. This popularity is also helping streaming services that carry NFL games gain viewership as well. Peacock showed a 19% jump in monthly viewing in October, and on Sundays, it averages 2% of all TV watched. Paramount+ viewership surged 8% during October, and Prime Video averaged 6.4% of all TV watched on Thursdays in the month. Streaming viewership overall was up 2.4% month-over-month, with Netflix continuing to lead all subscription streamers with 8% of all TV watched. YouTube viewership is creeping toward 13% of all TV viewed, and Disney streaming services combined to make up nearly 5% of all viewing. Cable viewership slipped 0.1% points overall during the month to 22.2% of all TV watched. But cable sports viewership jumped by nearly 50% as compared to September, representing 14% of the overall total of cable viewing. College football is helping to keep cable viewership afloat, but it clearly can’t keep up with NFL audiences. Football isn’t likely to relinquish its hold on viewers any time soon, as the NFL regular season doesn’t end until January. Until then, broadcast channels and streaming services that offer NFL games will continue to benefit from that programming. Prime Video also offers exclusive live access to NFL Thursday Night Football . … The Prime Video interface includes content with your subscription, alongside the ad-supported Freevee library, and some shows and movies that require a purchase, so double-check your selection before watching. 'Y: Marshals' sets premiere date on CBS
The channel has unveiled midseason release dates for some of its most anticipated shows. As CBS is wrapping up its traditional fall prime time season, the network is already looking ahead to an impressive slate of midseason premieres. The network has announced the premiere dates for a handful of new shows coming in the new year, including the first broadcast channel title from the “Yellowstone ” universe, “Y: Marshals .” Key Details: Sheridan spring: “Y: Marshals” will be released on March 1. Not done with Duttons: The series focuses on Kayce Dutton in his new role as a U.S. Marshal. True crime, too: A new Harlan Coben series is also set to premiere on CBS in the coming months. Sign Up $7.99+ / month paramountplus.com Paramount announced that “Y: Marshals” will be released on CBS on Sunday, March 1, and that new episodes will debut on the Eye Network each week, and following their linear premiere, they will become available on Paramount+ . The series is the next title from Taylor Sheridan to be announced on Paramount platforms. “Y: Marshals” follows Kayce Dutton, a former rancher and U.S. Navy SEAL, as he joins a specialized team of Marshals tasked with protecting Montana. Luke Grimes will reprise his role as Dutton in the series, and fellow “Yellowstone” cast members Gil Birmingham (Thomas Rainwater), Mo Brings Plenty (Mo), and Brecken Merrill (Tate Dutton) will return to their roles as well. The series is just one of many titles set in the “Yellowstone” universe that Paramount is working on. However, the show could also lead to a legal challenge from NBCUniversal , which earlier this year asserted that its contract with Paramount means that the streaming rights to “Y: Marshals” rightfully belong to Comcast. There has been no report of potential legal action over the spinoff yet, but things could get even more complicated since Sheridan signed a massive deal with NBCU to leave Paramount in 2029. “Y: Marshals” may have been the biggest announcement in Paramount’s midseason release schedule, but it wasn’t the only one. The company also announced that “Survivor ” Season 50 would premiere on Wednesday, Feb. 25. The new Dick Wolf drama series “CIA” comes out on Feb. 23, and a new cooking series “America’s Culinary Cup” debuts on March 4. CBS will also get a new true crime drama called “Harlan Coben’s Final Twist,” which debuts on Jan. 7. Many of Coben’s most popular mystery and thriller novels have been adapted into TV shows on Netflix and Prime Video , but he hasn’t lent his hand to a large selection of titles on linear TV yet.
