Turns out that if you want to actually know stuff, at some point you’re going to have to do the work yourself, or you’re just cosplaying expertise. It’s selling a shortcut that is at best a simulacrum of knowledge.

It works it works!!! Thank you so much. Any idea how to fix the transparency on the locked screen keypad numbers too?!

I am finding theatre so rewarding right now, for this exact reason. It’s the form of art least at risk from AI (I think?) and an incredibly rare opportunity for human connection.

Many of the perilous forces ascendant today—authoritarianism, AI, profit motive at all costs—are inimical to the arts with their devotion to imagination & creativity. Which is why if you follow any artistic pursuit whatsoever, amateur or professional, we need you practicing it now more than ever

It’s not ideal because it’s so expensive, but you can get your blood tested for MMR antibodies at Boots, Superdrug etc. I did this when I first heard about this and mine came back with antibodies and said I’m all good.

What a good username, fellow Pratchett fan! 👏👏👏

Starting his campaign with a visit to the Titanic was also good but just not quite as strong a vibe. The elation had already started to subside.

Thank god someone agrees. He is just awful. Kate Winslet’s character has some serious self loathing issues going on …

The Bridgerton team know how to play their audience like a harp (or at least they did in series 2. Not so much in series 3 unfortunately. YMMV.)

However in season two of Bridgerton we do get to see Jonathan Bailey emerging soaking wet from a lake. Ahem. Just in case that information is useful to anyone.

I came here just to say exactly that!

Sorry to hear! Hopefully someone local to you will do some Stoppard revival or other soon.

Your luck is in (if you’re in the uk and / or able to travel) because it’s on at the Old Vic from late January.

PSA: For anyone in London, the Hampstead Theatre is doing Indian Ink in a couple of weeks and the Old Vic is doing Arcadia from late Jan.

I never usually comment on people’s clothes in this feature because it’s a bit off, but I think we do need to make an exception in this case. I hope a friend gently takes him in hand and revamps his wardrobe.

Sounds like the work of Gail Brodholt … worth checking out!

I’d like to thank you for replying to me, and taking my questions in good faith. I still don’t understand the economics of publishing - you made the thing and you get 15% for all those hours and years of work! - but I appreciate you responding.

Freya’s English literature PhD is going well, then.

And you’re content with doing that and the money earned goes to pay other people? I’m not being an arse, I’m genuinely interested. Because that makes the publishing industry seem very grubby and parasitic on your talent, to me. You should be paid for the work you do.

I feel as though the wood between the worlds needs to be more connected, but it’s impossible to connect it to everywhere on a Tube map, I guess!
November 26, 2025 at 8:57 PM
But if I’m going to be paid £1k (or whatever) for a book that has taken me months or years of labour, that is effectively writing for free, right? So it’s basically a hobby, not a job? And yet publishers will publish it because they think they will make enough money for it to be worth their while?
