The Missouri Constitution bans mid-decade redistricting and requires compact districts. The new map violates this requirement by spreading a cohesive community in Kansas City across 3 districts. Voters deserve better. The courts must reject this illegal redistricting process.

Fighting For Fair Representation Under the Voting Rights Act for Native American Voters (Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians et al., v. Howe)

North Dakota’s 2021 legislative map illegally dilutes Native Americans’ voting power in northern North Dakota. The Spirit Lake Nation, Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians and individual Native voters challenged the map under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.

In the absence of a private right to sue, decisions about when to challenge discriminatory voting maps and laws under the VRA are left up to the U.S. Department of Justice, which has recently abandoned efforts to defend voting rights in multiple cases. 3/

The right to sue to enforce Section 2 of the VRA is threatened by a disastrous ruling from the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals, which SCOTUS fortunately put on hold in August. The lawsuit at the heart of this case challenges a discriminatory voting map in North Dakota. 2/
