Third, we cannot forgot PAX Aus! If you wanna see me chitchat with @jesawyer.bsky.social and @samwinkler.bsky.social about worldbuilding that sticks with you… I can only imagine it’s going to be a wildly fun hour ✨

Sunday the 12th at 12:30pm on the Main Stage
The image shows three photos of devs. First is Joshua Sawyer of Obsidian Entertainment who is a white middle-aged man with grey hair. The second is Lis Moberly of 20th Century Games, a pale woman with long brown hair. Last is Sam Winkler of Gearbox Software who is a white man with short brown hair and a beard.

Hi, folks! If you’re going to be at Melbourne Games Week here’s a heads up on where to find me.

First up, I’m thrilled to be keynoting at GCAP on Tuesday the 7th at 9:40am with a title that’s too long:
A blue square promotional template for GCAP that shows a woman with pale skin and open brown hair in a black shirt smiling at the camera. To her left is the title “Unsaved Progress Will Be Lost: Why the Game Industry Forgot How to Make Video Games and How to Fix It”, along with text beneath it in different fonts that say: Institutional Knowledge!!!!!, Has the game industry lost its mind??, Layoffs/Bureaucracy/Burnout/You Name It We Got It!, and Let’s get into it! The session is on Tuesday at 9:40am on October 7, 2025.

CGMA has provided critical education for both beginning and veteran game devs. It will be a huge loss if it dissolves, but at the very least its teachers should be compensated. Sending support to all my friends caught up in this mess.

Also a good reminder to all the doomers out there.
"I’m Ta-Nehisi Coates, I’m the writer, I’m the individual, right? But I am part of something larger, and I’ve always felt myself as part of something larger. I have a tradition, I have ancestry, I have heritage. What that means is that I do whatever I do within the time that I have in my life, whatever time I’m gifted with, and much of what I do is built on what other people did before them.

Then, after that, I leave the struggle where I leave it, and hopefully, it’s in a better place. Oftentimes it’s not. That’s the history in fact. And then my progeny, they pick it up, and they keep it going.

I am descended from people who, in their lifetime, fought with all their might for the destruction of chattel slavery in this country. And they never saw it. They never saw it. In my personal belief system, they died in defeat, in darkness.

So I guess the privilege that I draw out of this, the honor that I draw out of this, is not that things will necessarily be better in my lifetime, but that I will make the contribution that I am supposed to make."

I used to teach at UVU where Charlie Kirk was shot. Whatever you think of the situation, my friends on faculty and our students deserve more than this. No one should worry about getting shot at school or work. Ever.

Not from a movie but 1987’s song 今夜はハリケーン (Tonight is a Hurricane) sung by Kinuko Oomori for Bubblegum Crisis changed how music in anime was done forever it was so damn good.

That’s a good question I should know the answer to, but currently don’t. I will ask!

Anyway, I care about this topic! A lot!!

(That’s probably enough posting for one day)

Institutional memory, how it works, and how to preserve it is the crux of my keynote address at GCAP in October:
thewritegame.bsky.social
I’ll be speaking about institutional memory at DICE Europe with @jesawyer.bsky.social and @brendaromero.bsky.social in a couple weeks.
thewritegame.bsky.social
Much of the research on institutional memory has been driven in the forums of public policy and government, and once you start digging into it, you start to realize why it feels like so many of our governments have lost their collective minds.
thewritegame.bsky.social
There are several reasons an organization may lose its institutional memory (called institutional forgetting in scholarship), but mass layoffs are one of biggest factors.
ayshaufarah.bsky.social
Layoffs wreck studios. Institutional knowledge is SO valuable in the games industry. When you eventually replace that laid off employee, I don’t care if they’ve got 30 years of experience and dozens of games under their belt. They still have to learn the pipeline, the software, the systems.
