Rocky Linux features stable, but not the latest (and greatest?) packages. To get transcoding to work properly with Jellyfin on Rocky it's necessary to use the custom official binaries for the task.

If you're using hard disks that are optimised for power efficiency or are mobile devices (which are set to be power efficient by default) you may get erroneous unnecessary warning email from Munin complaining about being unable to retrieve temperature and SMART data for those disks when they're sleeping. This can happen if the installed Munin is incorrectly handling the (2) exit code returned by the smartctl utility on sleeping drives. 

Sometimes, after an improper shutdown, docker might fail to (re)start and report a network conflict due do multiple bridge networks having the same name. This happens because of leftover files in docker's configuration.

By default Virtualmin locks out and replaces a disabled site with a "virtualmin here; this site has been...." page, but it serves this page with a 200 OK status code to all visitors. This can be problematic if whatever content was on that site is used elsewhere and that elsewhere checks this status code.

OpenWRT is a great open-source operating system for embedded devices with great extensibility, benefiting from thousands of additional packages with extra functionality. These additional packages can be installed on the device's internal storage when such storage is available. For situations where the storage space is limited, OpenWRT can also install those packages in RAM memory instead of flash storage - with the side-effect of such installations not surviving reboots.

Same as one can never have enough memory, one can also never have enough disk space. Luckily, on virtual machines that's easier to resolve than with physical hardware. But increasing the disk space available for a VirtualBox machine is still a multi-step process.

Abduction is a great little Firefox extensions that lets you take image captures of websites. Unfortunately, changes added in Firefox 36 made the extension stop working and it now throws out an exception instead: "Not enough arguments [nsIWebBrowserPersist.saveURI]" nsresult: "0x80570001 (NS_ERROR_XPC_NOT_ENOUGH_ARGS)" The good news is that there is a dirty fix for this problem by editing the extension itself.

The nJoy Devi B700 is a budget tablet, running Android 4.2.2 on a dual-core Actions ATM7021 at 1.2Ghz and 1 Gb of RAM; other specs are 8 Gb of storage and a 7 in. screen. It seems to be using the same firmware - gs702c - as a P706 tablet, one that is a bit more heard of on the internet, so the same method of rooting works.

The Negear WNDR4500v2 router is quite a beefy piece of hardware with advanced firmware, including plenty of features even for a maniac user like me. I would most likely not have replaced it from day 1 however if it had one more feature that I absolutely needed: TFTP/PXE/BootP options for the DHCP server. There is where DD-WRT comes in...

Three months after installing KB2670838 and updating my graphics drivers from Catalyst Mobility 13.12 to 14.4 the font rendering issue popped up. Except I didn't get issues with text rendered in pages, but in Firefox's menu /tabs / titlebar itself. Nobody would think an update installed that long ago could be the culprit. Everyone would think the newly installed driver is (and it definitely has something do to with the issue).

A friend of mine was wondering about using a Raspberry PI as a NAS, the question being: how fast is the PI at file transfers from/to an external hard disk connected via a USB rack. So I booted up my PI, mounted some random 3.5 inch Samsung 160GB SATA hard drive inside another random Spire USB-SATA external (powered) rack and gave it a go at some testing.
