Yeah, Laets was not falling in love with a notion
He had met Aidenn before, that’s why he starts “Fragments” like this
Snip from my story “Fragments” “Heard anything about Aidden?” I asked, trying to change the subject. I met Kai’s human friend several months ago and couldn’t really get him out of my head. It didn’t help that he returned not long ago to do research or something. “He and L’Amen-a are still in New Wave,” he said matter-of-factly. Damn! I hated this. It wasn’t right of me to want someone who happily partnered with someone else, but I closed my eyes and saw his pretty face. It was utterly maddening! And it didn’t help that Maes was happy and in love either since our parents now keep asking when I’ll find a mate. Everything was fine when they nagged Maes. Now it all fell on me. “You are going to hurt yourself if you don’t relax a bit, Laets,” Kai said. “What?” “Listen, I know you have an infatuation with my friend Aidenn, and as soon as I mentioned his partner I saw the steam coming out of your ears,” Kai said, “It’s upsetting you thinking about her–” “A lot is upsetting me, Kai, but it isn’t Aidden’s partner, not really…” I trailed off. “Tell me about it before guests start arriving,” he said. “I’m not upset at his partner, but him having one means he’s out of my reach, but when I close my eyes I see him. He’s omnipresent. And Maes is with Rhina now, so Mama and Papa keep asking me when I’m going to find a partner; everything was good when Maes was single!” “Well, good for you, but he would tell me about how your parents got on his case about finding someone, and then I would tell him about how my parents did the same to me,” he said calmly. “I don’t really know how to help you with your infatuation, but maybe actually spending time with Aidenn and L’Amen-a would be a start to making them actual people to you rather than thoughts that haunt you.” “Do you really think that’s wise?” I asked. “Is stewing in this cycle you told me about worth not trying?” “Absolutely not!” “Good,” he said, “then you’ll come with me to visit them tomorrow.” I nodded affirmation.

But they didn’t like meet properly until later so that they could get to know each other
Snip from my work “Beyond the Universe” “Have you seen Aidenn,” Maes asked. “I only have eyes for you.” That was bad, but I didn’t care. “Aww, look at you being a pearl,” he said as we moved as gracefully as we could on the dancefloor with our height disparity. “I meant, ‘did you see how the townspeople are swarming him?” “I did,” I said, “I’m almost certain my cousin was inspecting him for tattoos, she’s so enamoured with him.” “Verala or Ca’Li?” “Please, do you have to ask?” “Ca’Li,” we said in unison. “Am I mistaken, or was Laetus also showing interest?” I asked as we continued to move, ever so awkwardly. “You are not mistaken, my brother was also showing interest.” “I hope for all their sakes they don’t get attached, he is still trying to get home,” I said. Maes usually would have said something. What was going on behind those bright blue eyes? “I mean, they could convince him to stay, if he felt anything for them or his other suitors.” “You’re assuming he has none back home?” “That’s a good point.” he mumbled. “It’s not very like you not to think of the multiple possibilities.” “I’ve become a romantic, what can I say?” He smiled a big dopey smile. “Let mutual attraction and a desire to stay win.” “Let him return home, there are people there who miss him, likely. Just as much as the people here missed Kai,” I said. “And partying,” Maes added under his breath. “And partying,” I conceded.

A snippet from story 4 “The Holidays” from L’Amen-a’s PoV
The sound that fresh snow made under foot grated in my ears, almost as bad as styrofoam rubbed together. As we walked mostly in silence, the party had been loud enough for us both, we passed a pedestrian walking in the opposite direction. A puff of smoke, acrid and disgusting, escaped their mouth, not steam from the cold, but the remnants of a drag taken from their lit cigarette. Another thing first encountered on Earth had been the vice of tobacco smoking. We had our own vices on the ship, some dangerous ones in fact– with a ship travelling for possibly centuries, it was no surprise that some passengers turned to substances to make endless travel seem less mind numbing, which ironically included using substances to numb the mind, but none so involved smoke. I wondered if that had to do with no smoking ever having been part of pre-Wanderer culture, or if it just happened to be because environmental systems on the ship would have detected smoke and tried to extinguish it. Being caught up in the fire suppression system didn’t sound pleasant at all given the chemicals at play.

Not compound vision, though the insectoids would. Have that going for them.

No for the wanderers it’s incredibly sharp perception and being able to see a wider spectrum of light (thus their visible spectrum is greater)

This morning, I arrived at the quai a few minutes before the ferry arrived so that I could greet them both. Unfortunately, in the shuffle of passengers disembarking they managed to see me before I saw them so it was me being greeted instead. “Hi Laets!” L’Amen-a shouted from the gangway. Not surprising that she noticed me before I noticed her; Wanderer eyes were remarkable. They could see farther than most mammals, and see spectra outside what is considered the visual range, at least by human standards, which Aidenn assured me was similar to the general mammal population of the islands, which by consequence meant it was better than several aquatics, at least while we were on land. Underwater, our eyesight put even Wanderers to shame.

L’Amen-a

(I remembered to photograph the inked lines today 😄)

L’Amen-a is a Wanderer, an alien species in my stories that has been wandering the galaxy since their home planet suffered a calamity. The ship she was born on made contact with Earth in the 2020s.
She’s Aidenn’s fiancée.

The picking of the flowers was a bit challenging with only one hand, and since I forgot to bring a bag with me, carrying them also posed a challenge. Thankfully I managed to wrap the tendrils around me, simplifying the carrying process. The mammals on the bus back were not pleased that I had so many of the flowers with me. I wish I could have made their discomfort go away, but in the absence of that ability, I elected to get off the bus and walk the rest of the way home. *** Rhina With Maes having been out and about I expected him to be home before I arrived. When I found I was home alone, I next expected he would arrive before Kai. When Kai arrived at his usual time and my pearl still wasn’t home, I thought to call. No answer there either. “Kai, I think Maes is in trouble,” I said. “He’s not answering his phone?” he asked. “No.” My voice cracked. “I’ll go look for him,” Kai said, getting off the couch. He didn’t even bother to slip on his shoes, he went straight for the door and– “Found him,” he grinned. Standing in the doorway, Maes wreathed in flowers and backlit by the setting sun, looked at once divine and in shambles. “What happened to you?!” I cried. “I picked ghostly tendrils and walked home because the scent was bothering the mammals on the bus,” he said flatly.

Had to make modifications since i couldn’t find mastic or long pepper

So i used two varieties of aromatic leaf (bay leaf and pomelo leaf) and a mix black, white, pink, and red pepper

Generally it’s more in the way i write them and the things they notice.

But one thing i can point to as words used is when Rhina is asking herself questions, she’ll refer to herself as “big girl” very apt as she’s seven feet tall and fit.

But here’s an example
Do you want to stay on Blue Island? I always thought I would return here, never really thinking about leaving it. Something to revisit in the future, big girl. I wasn’t single anymore either, I would have to discuss it with Maes.
