10/8/1949: The first Skyline Chili opens. The restaurant was started by Nicholas Lambrinides, a former chef at Empress Chili, and his three sons. Located on Glenway Ave in Price Hill, Lambrinides named it for the parlor's spectacular view of the city. Today there are over 130 locations.

10/06/1871 – The Tyler Davidson Fountain, "The Genius of Water," is unveiled before a crowd of twenty thousand. The fountain was commissioned by Henry Probasco as a tribute to his late brother-in-law and business partner and as gift “To the people of Cincinnati.” #cincinnatihistory

10/5/1921: The Newport, Kentucky Steel Strike begins when Andrews Steel Co. imposes wage reductions without negotiations. The response was severe, and the National Guard was finally called in to stamp out the protests. The strike unofficially ended when troops were withdrawn in April 1922. #otd

9/16/1932: Actor/dancer George Chakiris is born in Norwood. He played mostly bit parts until a publicity photo with Rosemary Clooney increased his popularity, leading to a movie contract. His most famous role is Bernardo in West Side Story, for which he won an Oscar. #cincinnatihistory

9/14/1859: Cincinnati's first public transit system opens, using horse-drawn streetcars. Travel was limited by the city's steep hills until the switch to electric cars in 1889. #cincinnatihistory

9/13/1862: The 21st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment crosses the pontoon bridge on its way to fortify Louisville. It was Cincinnati's first bridge across the Ohio River, created during the Civil War from planks laid across coal barges. It was dismantled that fall. #cincinnatihistory

9/10/2000: The Bengals hold their inaugural regular season game at the newly completed Paul Brown Stadium. The crowd of 64,006 attendees set a Cincinnati sports record at the time. Unfortunately that crowd witnessed the Bengals lose 24-7 to the Browns that day. #cincinnatihistory

9/8/1889: Robert A. Taft, politician, lawyer and eldest son of William Howard Taft is born. He was a US senator and almost the republican nominee for president several times. His biggest impact was the passing of the Taft-Hartley Labor Act which limits the power of unions. #cincinnatihistory

9/7/1993: John Weld Peck II dies at his desk in the federal building downtown that bears his name. A captain in WWII, he was appointed a Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit by Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966. #cincinnatihistory

9/4/1890: Union Army veteran, lawyer and 30th governor of Ohio, Edward Follansbee Noyes, dies. While serving as colonel of the 39th Ohio Infantry, he was severely wounded in battle and lost his left leg. As governor, he improved election laws and promoted fish conservation methods.

9/3/1927: Conductor Ralph Lyford dies at 45. He founded the Cincinnati Opera, conducting its first performances at the Cincinnati Zoo. He composed the opera Castle Agrazant, an ambitious piece for a chorus of 65 and an orchestra of 60 members. It premiered at Music Hall the year before his death.

8/29/2012: The Blue Ash Airport permanently closes. Established in 1921 (four years before Lunken) it was Cincinnati’s oldest airport. It originally opened as Grisard Field but went through a couple of name changes and owners before Cincinnati bought it in 1955. The property is now Summit park.

8/23/1899: Dwight H. Baldwin dies. He was a Cincinnati retailer of pianos and organs before starting the Baldwin Piano Company to manufacture the instruments himself. In 1895, they introduced their first grand piano. #cincinnatihistory

8/21/1966: The Beatles perform a midday show at Crosley Field after the previous night’s concert is rained out. This was the only time The Beatles cancelled a show. They had been feeling burnt out from touring, and their experience in Cincinnati led them to decide this would be their final tour.

8/18/1928: Controversial Reds owner, Marge Schott, is born. Under her watch, the team won the 1990 World Series. She was twice banned by MLB in response to her use of racial and ethnic slurs. In 1999, due to these controversies and failing health, she sold her controlling interest in the Reds.
