More like average out the damage over 3 rounds. So if the "deadly" threat says 6d6 damage, have the animated objects do 2d6 each round. This makes it still deadly, but also gives the players the chance to retreat or think through how to "resolve". Thats one way to go about it.

Wait what am I saying: just use the stats from animated objects, what’s what I would do. Then you get the cr built in.

Best way is to compare its damage out put to other monsters
Though honestly I would t design it with a cr but rather as a hazard and use the damage form the table that gives minor medium or deadly damage. If ongoing, I’d stay to the medium or minor

So I have been publishing to DMs guild off and on for a few years now (6?). Had one hit gold which was neat. About two years ago I made the jump to start doing freelance with a small addition to Zweihander: Reforged and then about a year ago I started actively pursuing more.
