This plaque has been around for a while, but I passed it a few times while training for last weekend's Great Scottish Run, and it always makes me smile when I do, so I thought I'd post it again. It's on a wall beside the Maryhill Locks in Glasgow.

These buildings were constructed in a variety different styles, mostly over approximately an 80 year period (from the mid-1800s to the 1930s) and yet they still come together to form a single united streetscape that is uniquely Glaswegian.

I love this Art Nouveau style peacock stained glass window on Fitzroy Place in Glasgow. The door handle is pretty special, too.

This includesrecessed corner bay windows, a lantern on a feature corner roof, and sweeping curved lines. If we could do this as recently as a couple of decades ago, why are so many new builds in the city now just generic boxes with no local flavour?

Saint Ninian Terrace in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. While this is a relatively new building (dating from the 1990s), it incorporates a number of classic characteristics of Glasgow's traditional architecture.

Somewhat surprisingly, despite being a strongly Christian society, most architectural sculptures in Victorian Glasgow were instead inspired by other cultures, such as ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Persian, and even northern European pagan mythologies. The exact reasons for this are unclear.

Attributed by James Young, this is one of the few achitectural sculptures with an overtly biblical inspiration in the city's Victorian financial district.

I love the repeating patterns in this 1870s building on the corner of Hope Street and Bothwell Street in Glasgow. It was designed by Peddie and Kinnear, and was originally meant to be the hotel for Central Station.

This photo was taken a couple.
of years ago, but I passed the shop the other day, and it still looked the same from the outside. I didn't look inside, though.

Originally Sherbrooke United Free Church, and now Sherbrooke Mosspark Church, on Nithsdale Road on the southside of Glasgow. Designed by W.F. McGibbon in a 13th Century Gothic style and built around 1900.

That's a very good question. I'd imagine they were, and I'm sure I remember seeing old lead gas pipes in tenement closes. However, I seem to recall that they used different sized pipes for Town Gas and North Sea Gas (due to pressure differences?). I'll need to look into it to see what I can find out

Love this magnificent sleeping lion at the 19th Century mausoleum built for Alexander, the 10th Duke of Hamilton, in Strathclyde Park to southeast of Glasgow. It was sculpted by David Bryce.

With each one around 24 storeys high and containing 138 flats, they were designed to replace the traditional sandstone tenements which were being demolished in large numbers across the city at this time.
