Roddenberry figured humanity would have to go through some pretty dark times to get to the enlightenment of the Trek universe (which I'd argue was muddied after his death, even in the TNG days).

When I first posted this in 2013, a woman named Mary Jones threatened to sue me, blah blah blah -- she was OUTRAGED that I'd post something specifically about HER. It takes all kinds. But it made me want to post it again and again and again. 😂
