John is on a planet that I can’t remember the name of (sorry) but it’s filled with clouds and checkerboard patterned hills. The clouds are big and fluffy and curled like how they are in the Homestuck comic. John is looking so very 13 years old here and is starting up at his surroundings with a look of awe on his face. Page four. Tenar leans down towards Therru, speaking with utmost love and compassion, “People see your scars, but they see you too,” Therru looks away, and then meets Tenar’s eye in the next panel as she says, “and you aren’t your scars, you aren’t ugly, you aren’t evil.” In the next panel Tenar looks so sad, “You are Therru, and beautiful.” But then she smiles, as if imagining a happier future for this little girl, “You are Therru, who can work, and walk, and run.” We cut back to see Tenar kneeling and Therru standing, “And dance beautifully, in a red dress.” Page five. Tenar stares at Therru, waiting for a response. Therru stares at Tenar, looking sad, and then looks down at Tenar’s hands. She reaches down to take Tenar’s hands, then Tenar raises her hands up to meet Therru’s. They stay like that, holding hands in a panel that once again takes up the width of the pages and submerses them in a field of color. This panel is reversed, however, from the previous page-wide panel. On all sides light encroaches, while they sit in a puddle of darkness. Therru speaks, “It’s a beautiful dress.”

1/2 An adaptation of a scene from Tehanu (my favorite Earthsea book) from 2023. TW for implied past child abuse? #thistlequestcomics
Page one. There are three panels. The top two are taking place in the same place, the same moment, but are separated in the middle to allude to the disconnect between Tenar and Therru. Therru stares, not playing as a young girl should, at her dolphin figurine. Burn scars cover the entire right side of her body. In the other panel, Tenar is hand sewing a red dress for Therru, looking concerned for the little girl. In the bottom panel, which takes up most of the bottom part of the page, some time has passed and Tenar is holding the finished dress. Around her we can see the trappings of their everyday life: shoes, jackets, slippers, baskets, etc. Tenar gazes at the dress softly, with love. Page two. There are six panels. Therru comes into the main living space from another room wearing the red dress with a white smock over it. In the next panel, Tenar smiles at her lovingly, “Now then, you look beautiful.” The next two panels shrink a bit, trapping Therru in slightly smaller boxes than the ones that Tenar occupies on this page. Therru looks at the dress, and then looks away, clearly feeling some manner of discomfort. In the next panel Tenar gazes at her sadly, recognizing that Therru is having a difficult time embracing this dress due to her past. She tries to assure her, “You are beautiful.” Page three. Tenar approaches Therru, and lowers herself to the ground. “Listen to me Therru, come here” In the next panel Therru continues not to meet Tenar’s eye as Tenar says, “Therru….” The next panel takes up the entire width of the page. For a moment they exist in a space of color and feeling. Therru stands silently while Tenar kneels, the both of them encroached on either side by darkness. Tenar takes a deep, sad breath, and in the page’s final panel, she begins to speak, “You have scars, ugly scars, because an ugly, evil thing was done to you.”

Tehanu piece that’s been languishing in my WIP folder for forever
Sketches of characters and moments from the book Tehanu by Ursula K Le Guin, the fourth book in the Earthsea series. A dragon flies across most of the composition. In the negative space behind the dragon we can see Tenar holding up a handmade dress, Ged herding sheep, and fire. In front of the dragon we see Therru’s small hands holding her dolphin figurine, and a drawing of Therru sitting down and looking despondent.

Illustration of a faerie and her dragon dog. The faerie has been described by my roommate as being marshmallows as a character. She is humanoid but has many fantastical traits. All of her upper body and head is covered in curly, luscious hair. Her pale face emerges from it. We can see her eyes, completely black like the eyes of a small bird. Her eyebrows are long and thick, flowing from her face and sideways into her mane seamlessly. Beneath all her hair emerges flowing fabric that covers all the rest of her body. Her coloration is blue, purple, and white. Her dragon dog comes down from the top left of the illustration and wraps around her at the bottom right of the illustration with great elegance. Her dragon dog is blue and green. Its head and ears are long and pointed. His hair and brows are similarly luscious to the faerie’s. They stand on a floor of purple and pink tile with flower motifs. Behind them we can see the pink sky and a single pillar. The purple pillar looks as if it got its own idea about how it wanted to look part way into its carving. Toward the top it explodes into natural shapes as if it had grown that way. The sun is low in the sky and is currently uncovered by the hazy clouds on either side of it. A WLW illustration based on the tale of Beauty and the Beast. The whole illustration is bordered by wild thorns and roses. Beauty is leaping upwards towards Beast’s ghostly human form as if to catch her. Beauty is leaping out of a panel where we can see the Beast’s castle behind her, and outside of the panel Beast is caught up in a major act of magic, the silhouette of her Beast form arching backwards behind her as if in great pain. We can see the moon behind the beast form, and the rest of the composition is taken up by thorn bushes. The Beast, in contrast to her Beast form, floats down gracefully. Beauty is wearing Victorian clothing, and Beast is wearing Regency underclothes. Illustration of Sasha and Endellion called “Dancing With Ghosts”. Endellion is leaping in the air towards Sasha with her arm outstretched, but it passes right through him. Sasha is rising out of a desecrated, fiery hand and has caught Endellion by the shoulder. Sasha is out of Endellion’s reach, but she is within his. A glowing tower looms over them. This illustration pictures the two main characters of Tether— a comic I’m developing— Endellion and Sasha. Here they are pictured as adolescents piercing each other’s ears with needle and thread. At the bottom of the illustration they are pictured as adults. Endellion holds her face in her hands, and Sasha is turned away from the viewer. Both of their faces are obscured, and they are connected by their ears with two white threads that reach across the composition before they meet in the middle and are tied together in a bow.

Design notes for the above post. Herein I comment on different parts of this sketch page in a white margin that I’ve added in post. In the top left is a drawing of myself as and angel saying “Perfect angel I would never put these characters through devastating torment.” About some dandelions near Endellion sketches “Dandelions for Endellion….they both have ‘lion’ as part of the name. For once I didn’t look up the flower meaning.” About the sketches that inspired this whole page, “This all started with a sketch. I was sick so I was drawing rather loosely, but I really liked the design choices that I made and wanted to explore further!” A few notes about a Sasha sketch in the top right corner: “Sasha has always had a connection to Ouroboros. In Tether snakes can represent danger, but they have the potential for rebirth.” “The city of ferus and its ancient wizard towers.” “Bleeding heart.” (Referring to a drawing of the flower) A note on some framing that I drew, “I love frames” A note about the Lily of the Valley drawing, “Loneliness for Sasha” A note about the drawing of Sasha and Endellion as children “sweet babies”. A note on the drawing of Sasha and Endellion fighting, “Are they trying to kill each other? Why yes!” A note on a drawing of Endellion, “Just Endellion looking cool.” In the bottom right is a doodle of me doing a thumbs up and saying “hehe yeah……”

Chibi version of the faerie from the “A faerie of old illustration.” The dragon-dog is small enough to be held the the faerie’s arms, and his bottom feet are sticking out with little toe beans!! The faerie sort of has a cut impression and, as is the case with chibis, has a more simplified design.
