Portland is a beautitful and peaceful city; and the "hellscape" he claims (and that the media is complicit in portraying) is in reality just that our citizenry has a conscience and is willing to stand on our principles, act the truth of loving our neighbor, and protect the vulnerable among us.

I'd like to revisit this again and talk about the emergence of #cozyfantasy and #hopepunk and #solarpunk and other similar genres that we are seeing emerge out of the dark days we are surviving today.

- and that by contrast we saw in the yuppie years an increase in cynical, ironic, and dystopian fiction (like the vampire craze in the 90s) as a relatively stable society that had substituted capitalistic values for moral values yearned for conflict to find meaning.

I wrote a paper once about why and how the time period directly following WWII became the golden age of science fiction, fantasy, and utopian fiction - not out of escapism, but out of a belief that the moral imagination was fundamentally important to a healthy society.
