The text is clear that it is a mercy killing - but an *unintentional* one. They help him out of his glass cage and say they can help him hide, but he blows away in the wind "to their dismay". He disappears with a "sigh of the most profound and exhausted relief".

A slightly different but related point is the fact that they are "bragging" about how much time and effort they put into this and it's like - did this save you anything over just paying real actors and slapping some CG over it? Going out of their way to make a worse product. It's bizarre.

I think this is very important. Being a parent a very very hard. It's so much harder than anyone could possibly prepare you for. And the lack of support structures and constant mental and physical burden of the many foibles of American society re: child care is a huge burden.
