🚨 In case you missed it… our 4-year time-series analysis of Arctic Ocean viruses is out now!

Near-monthly samples — including through the dark, cold, polar winter ❄️ — using long-read metagenomics.

After a four-year investigation, a breakthrough study reveals the cause of sea star wasting disease (SSWD). A strain of the bacterium Vibrio pectenicida is the culprit behind the marine epidemic that has killed billions of sea stars since 2013. Read the study: 🔗https://tinyurl.com/4rcb3xpf

Finally is this story out public!! With an amazing historical dataset from IMR (@havforskningsinstituttet) we demonstrate how human perturbations impact the genomic signal in one of the largest cod stocks in the world: the northeast arctic cod | Science Advances www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
A century of anthropogenic perturbations impact genomic signatures of the iconic migratory Atlantic cod
Retrospective assessment of the iconic migratory Atlantic cod uncovers human-induced genome-wide changes during the last century.

First time ever that cryptic species in seagrasses were identified going full population genomics in NW Pacific Nanozostera japonica. In a secondary contact zone, triploid F1 hybrids were found among the two putative species, but no higher order hybrids, suggesting genomic incompatibility

There might be more seagrass species than you think - happy to share this fantastic collaboration with Xiaomei Zhang, @lei-yu.bsky.social and many others

The way forward: we suggest a truly independent institution like the European Central Bank that determines non-negotiable quotas. Great team work of #Kiel scientists led by Rainer Froese @geomarkiel.bsky.social

Total catches in western #Baltic Sea crashed 2002 -2022. Note that under an ecosystem-based management (EBFM), catches could be much higher. Much lower catches are currently not sustainable because stock sizes of cod, herring and sprat were depleted by ongoing overfishing.
thorstenreusch.bsky.social
Ever heard about “phantom recoveries” and “overfishing ratchets” ? These explain why still so many fish stocks are in a bad shape in European waters despite binding goals of the EU fisheries policy. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Systemic failure of European fisheries management
Overcoming shortsighted interests with politically independent ecosystem-based catch limits may end overfishing in EU waters

My knees tell me I’m aging—but do you also wonder what we can learn about aging by looking beyond humans? If you study aging in corals, duckweed, or other "unusual" systems, join us at @eseb2025.bsky.social to talk about aging outside the box! Abstract deadline: 5 May. eseb2025.com/call-for-abs...
The poster for the symposium titled: "Ageing outside of the box: insights from unusual and non-model species" within the ESEB 2025 conference. The symposium is organised by Margaux Bieuville from the University of Mainz and Yagmur Erten from the University of Groningen. The invited speakers are Thorsten Reusch from GEOMAR and Robert Laird from the University of Lethbridge. The conference takes place on 17-22 August 2025 in Barcelona, Spain. The abstract submission deadline is 5 May 2025.
