👋🏽 Thoth is an open metadata management and dissemination platform for #OAbooks, developed under the remit of @copim.bsky.social, now a non-profit CIC registered in the UK, and key partner in the Copim Open Book Futures project (2023-26).

"It was about relationships, shared labour, and refusal. It was about making space – for each other, for alternative forms of scholarship, and for survival."

A nice quote from L'HarmattanOA @ #OASPA2025 on how we support them: "The international [book] distribution is managed by Thoth. Thanks to their persistent efforts our titles are submitted to several databases such as OAPEN&DOAB, EBSCO, ProQuest collections, Google Books, & Web of Science."

The academic system needs to take the work of building community-led, open source/access initiatives much more seriously as a valid and vital form of academic labour

One answer from the @openbookcollective.bsky.social is their Collective Development Fund: an optional 5% fee paid by the publishers & services in the collective. This creates a pot of money disbursed via grant payments to publishers & service providers for projects that build OA publishing capacity.

Stephen Pinfield - same convos we had in the 90s over serials crisis with concerns about "extractive profits" (defined as shareholder profits leaving the system, not reinvesting in scale/ innovation) - how do these models from the panel reinvest?

This is more than just adapting to an imperfect system. It is a bottom up set of initiatives that are not just working differently, but showing how a different scholarly system can be built, and that crucially this involves working with each other differently and collaboratively/interoperably

This guy is looking down at us all over my shoulder. Wondering who this is, in the context of the conversations at #OASPA2025. Monopolistic commercial publishing practices? LLM-based exploitation of open content? Higher education meltdown and rising censorship? Caffeine overload?

We also had a lovely #CopimCorner together with the scholar-led.network, and many #oat25 participants dropped in to stay for a drink, enjoying the wonderful view over Lake Constance from Konzil's main terrace 😍
