Yeah I use this like some people use the 📌. It is value neutral. Depending on the post, "Important" may be prounced in the same way as it is in "Important Videos".

(you'd THINK that the user@host format would denote that that user was at that host, but nope! GTS's docs refer to this as a "split-domain deployment", but it can happen even when the hosting software does not explicitly support it)

Yeah profile resolution without making an HTTP request is not actually possible, not only because not everyone uses Mastodon's URL scheme, but also because you have no way of knowing if the server the user is on is the one in their username!

(fun fact: AP user@host names needn't be bidirectionally bound to be deemed valid. So anyone can give you a username on a host they control and have that reference your account.)

Or you can just. Like. Not do the fixup. It's not ideal, but breaking links on a handle change is not uncommon.

With Mastodon/AP, you MUST make an HTTP request, there is no other mechanism for getting a URL, and we aren't gonna do HTTP requests in the cleaner because, like. No.

I mean with bluesky it's a little better in that you can, in theory, create a handle-based link based on text alone and then kick off a job on a work to go resolve the DID and fixup the link and so long as the user doesn't change their handle in that interval it's fine.

This is actually something I was already thinking about! In no small part because I will Die Mad about what OIDC did to OpenID and IMHO AT's system moves us back towards what God and Brad intended.

The lack of discovery is rough (I'd offer to help but I really need to learn more perl and I've been distracted by ATproto stuff lol) but DW is a really nice RSS reader and I've never gotten more comments just welcoming me to the site anywhere else.

What drives me the most insane about that particular example is that even, like, RECENTLY, the person who did it was like "I want an explanation of what I did wrong and why I was banned, I never got an email."

I saw someone saying describing that as a death threat was "defamation" and. like. Even if that wasn't the intent, you can SEE what it looks like, right?
