Also a lot of that “barbarity” from the early ussr did not come from Stalin or the higher echelons of the party, but rather from below.

Sure there were still racists but they were one of the only countries trying to make all races equal. Lots of African Americans went there to escape racism and found it better than America at that time.
Though a lot of thing in Russia went to shit when the ussr was destroyed.
