Also, Eisenhower considered himself apolitical because as a member of the military he didn't want to be involved in politics. He wanted to be above that. He claimed to have not voted while in the military for that reason. That famous 1956 GOP Platform on the meme was just to cater to Ike.

For those who don't know, Eisenhower was a war hero and would have been elected no matter which party he ran as. Both parties wanted him, he chose the GOP over his belief they supported the military more. The post war boom happened because we were the only major country not bomb and in rubble.
