I like to gaze deeply into my partner’s eyes until he’s sure I’m about to say something rocking. Softly, I begin to sing “It’s been a long time…”. He leaves the room.

In my neighborhood of Seattle, we established a mutual aid group when the SNAP cliff approached. We collected food to distribute in meal kit bags to neighborhood Little Free Libraries that we recruited to cover into Little Free Pantries. Getting a fridge would be huge!

Disclaimer: I have no children, I do not work with them, I do NOT judge parents with iPads in restaurants. I appear to be more aware in my babyless state than the author that babies do not spring from the womb reading Chaucer, so I still feel qualified to comment on commentary about today’s youths.

Just think an article scrutinizing how annoying and un-art-like an independent YT show teaching babies and toddlers to talk using evidence based methods is —- should have tried harder to reach the high bar the author is setting for the content they are posting their kids in front of.

I opened this piece to read a curious investigation of how the ubiquity of screens is *actually* affecting children but after the first Ms. Rachel sentence I switched to spite reading mode, which I will now exit. Like what you like, get the best art and education for your kids if you can!

The fixation on Ms Rachel in a left magazine means that her advocacy for Palestinian children had to be addressed. It did fine in summarizing this, but gave up on tying her activism to the theme of the piece (that iPads are replacing books? That kid’s media should be better??)

The obvious response to the author is: If you want your children to only have good art, and you think Ms Rachel is trash, why are you not simply turning it off? This objection is not handled, except by mentioning some families can’t afford child care.

It appears Baffler determined the theme of their issue was that reading is dying so maybe the other articles in it actually demonstrate that is true, bc this one is just hand-wringing that it could be true.
