In one ending, an entire world is destroyed for a single life to be saved. A fundamental villanous action with good intentions.
In the other, a single life is sacrificed to keep the world alive. A fundamental heroic act fueled by fear and grief.
Neither of them are good endings.

Neither of the endings feel good because they are the result of a fundamental character flaw that both of them share: they don't care for their own life and are willing to sacrifice themselves to give the other a life they don't want.
