President Barack Obama established DACA for those brought to the U.S. as children until Congress could pass legislation to give those “Dreamers” a path to legal residence. Thanks to the program, Dreamers by the hundreds of thousands gave the U.S. government their personal information in exchange for a promise they would not be deported. But Congress never acted, and now, in its quest to reach 3,000 deportations a day, the administration is targeting the DACA recipients, whose adherence to the rules the government established makes them easy to find and target.

Putting Patients Over Profits Right now, billionaire health corporations are buying up independently owned health care clinics across the country, from physician practices to surgical centers. They’re invading our doctors’ offices to pad their own pockets and leave patients out in the cold. It’s happening in Oregon. In 2020, United Health Group bought Oregon Medical Group in Eugene. In the aftermath of that acquisition, Oregon Medical Group reportedly lost dozens of doctors and kicked out thousands of patients. And just last year, United Health Group bought the Corvallis Clinic -- hugely important to the mid-Willamette Valley. Jeff is doing something about it. He introduced the Patients Over Profits Act to prevent billionaire health insurance corporations from gobbling up private practices. The aim of the bill is right in the name: we need to put patients over profits! Everyone should have access to the quality, affordable health care they need, when they need it -- and that access shouldn’t depend on which Fortune 500 company owns their doctor’s office

THE CORRUPTION IN OUR GOVERNMENT IS ASTOUNDING
Bloomberg reported yesterday that Argentina’s leader Javier Milei appears to have received more financial support from the U.S. government than the $20 billion more widely reported. The U.S. withdrew $870 million from its account at the International Monetary Fund shortly before a similar sum appeared in Argentina’s IMF fund just in time for that country to pay an $840 million debt. It is, one redditor noted, “turning into a scandal.”

The regime in Washington wonders why Americans are sicker than the citizens of other countries?? This might be a place to start looking:
Instead of protecting families, this bill: • Fails to re-evaluate thousands of chemicals already in our food – many never reviewed, or reviewed decades ago. • Allows chemicals linked to cancer and reproductive harm to be classified GRAS. • Provides no new resources for safety review – even after a 19% FDA staff cut. We can’t let this industry-backed bill become law. Congress needs to hear loud and clear that Americans demand real reform and transparency in our food system.

On November 5, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained several individuals in Lane County. In response to these events, I joined Congressperson Hoyle; Senator Wyden; Speaker Fahey; Senator Manning; Representatives Fragala, Nathanson, and Lively; Lane County Commissioners Buch, Trieger, and Farr; Eugene Mayor Knudson; Eugene City Councilors Leech, Keating, Yeh, Evans, and Groves; Springfield Mayor VanGordon; and Springfield City Councilor Rodley to issue the following statement: "We are alarmed by the reported actions carried out by ICE yesterday in Lane County, which included the violent detention of several Oregonians, and by the ongoing reports of individuals not receiving their constitutionally protected rights to due process and legal representation. This was only the most recent in a series of aggressive raids carried out across the state in recent months. We are working together with community leaders and local law enforcement to learn more and ensure that all of our constituents are accounted for. "Every Oregonian and every person in the United States, regardless of immigration status, is entitled to the full protections guaranteed by the Constitution. We will use all tools at our disposal as representatives of this community to ensure that those protections are upheld for the individuals detained today and for any Oregonian subjected to unjust or unlawful enforcement actions by ICE." This type of unlawful conduct and overreach by our federal employees must be called out and stopped.

I really cannot imagine going to all the trouble of getting elected to the Senate only to get there and decide not to stand up for healthcare, or democracy, or people’s ability to afford their lives. If those things aren’t worth fighting for, then truly what is?

An explanation as to why Democrats negotiated.....
Today, on the floor of the Senate, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said the Democrats would vote to end the government shutdown in exchange for a one-year extension of the expiring premium tax credits and the establishment of a bipartisan committee to figure out how to revise the tax credits so they could continue past next year’s open enrollment period. This would have answered the short-term problems of the increasingly painful government shutdown and skyrocketing premiums and left the question of extending the premium tax credits to voters next year. If Republicans took the deal, the Democrats could claim they had negotiated an end to the shutdown that put into place the popular extensions of the premium tax credits and that called for next year’s midterm voters to decide if they wanted them extended further. But if Republicans rejected it, Democrats would be in the position of having offered a reasonable—even a popular—deal that Republicans refused because Trump insisted they must not negotiate. Such an outcome would make the Republicans own the ongoing shutdown. Republicans rejected the offer outright. Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) called it a “nonstarter” that “doesn’t even get close, and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called it “political terrorism.” The rejection put the Republicans in the awkward position of rejecting the reopening of the government because they are determined to kill a measure that is popular with three-quarters of the American people.

Just a reminder: What the Senate Democrats are insisting on before agreeing to a continuing resolution is the extension of the premium tax credits that support the Affordable Care Act healthcare insurance marketplace. The Republicans neglected to extend those credits in their July budget reconciliation bill—the one they call the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”—although they extended tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. Without the credits, millions of people will be unable to afford healthcare insurance and will go uncovered, and coverage costs will skyrocket for millions more. Seventy-eight percent of Americans want those tax credits extended. That includes 59% of Republicans. Only 22% don’t want them extended. So Trump is refusing even to negotiate with Democrats to end the shutdown when almost 80% of Americans want what the Democrats are demanding. Heather Cox Richardson

Rebecca Solnit To think of him outdoors in public all day under these circumstances facing whoever and whatever comes his way is to contemplate what it's like to live in fear. It reminded me that most of us walk around being opaque, and if we're white who's to know where we stand on immigration? I wished I could convey my convictions so clearly all the time as I did walking down the street. Or rather most white people go around being opaque and most brown people walk around being aware they could be attacked, brutalized, grabbed, abducted, imprisoned, and deported, and being a citizen or a legal immigrant is no protection –Nicole Foy at Pro Publica reports that more than 170 US citizens have been seized and detained.

When he arrived in Florida, a reporter asked Trump about the shutdown and whether he would meet with Democrats despite the fact he has, until now, refused to, and has ordered congressional Republicans not to meet with Democrats either. “I’m always going to meet,” he said. “All they have to do is open up the country. Let them open up the country, and we’ll meet. We’ll meet very quickly. But they have to open up the country. It’s their fault, everything is their fault.”
