Maybe talk through a couple of concepts and how different approaches would highlight different parts? My son (yr 11) recently pointed out that one approach would be good for getting through junior high school assessments but terrible for problem solving in Methods.

I’d make sure they were really familiar with excel. Also, if they don’t know about wolfram alpha then they probably should.

Australian here. I work with hundreds of classes. The concepts teachers tend to be concerned about are:
K-2:
- Quantity (eg, the counters moved so there must be more, recounting their own fingers)
- subtraction
- place value

3-5:
- place value
- division
- fractions

6-8:
- same as 3-5, plus facts
