My only complaint is the ending. And a very small part of it. Helena and Kaine deserved better than the way they were perceived by the rest of the world. My poor babies 🥹

Everyone suffered SO MUCH yet I never felt like the details were unnecessary. It just reinforced just how horrible the circumstances were. War is not pretty. No matter what kind of propaganda they try to sell you. The vast majority of people involved do not come out okay.

If you can't handle dark topics- do not read. Even when the romance started developing, it was still bleak cuz they were in the middle of a war and struggled with their emotions. The author did an amazing job showcasing the brutality and suffering without making it trauma porn.

The worldbuilding/magic system is dense and hard to follow at first. But I think it's meant to be confusing because the main character, Helena, is also confused for a third of the book with the lack of memories. Watching her suffer was hard. This book is basically 1000 pages of misery.
