A discard in my apartment by a summer houseguest. Would not have read it otherwise but glad that I did.

Prohibition-era murder mystery.

This is the third book my book club has read that’s narrated by an unlikeable character who is a professional writer. But as I was the one who suggested this book, I’ve only myself to blame.

Left in my apartment by a houseguest last June. Read by me in January.

Mostly a slow burn but the ending was almost abrupt.

Just reread this vampire novella with its lesbian overtones.

I never knew this story about my hometown state.

Is it possible this is only the second murder mystery I’ve come across set in the opera world? (Donna Leon’s debut being the only other one I can think of)

Book club pick. Would not have read it otherwise as I haven’t enjoyed McEwan beyond Atonement. But this was satisfying and similarly plot twisty, if less gut-wrenching in its twist.

Agatha Christie was a lady with some seriously f’ed up ideas about genetics and about adoption.

Final read and final Christmas Murder Mystery of 2025. Here’s to 2026.

I wanted a more traditional “gather all the suspects in the drawing room” ending but this is my favorite read of the Christmas Mystery season so far.

A (kind of preachy) young adult educational text about neuro-divergence in a Christmas mystery wrapping.

Another Christmas mystery!

Time for Christmas Mystery novels.

Definitely evokes a specific time which sometimes makes it feel dated, but also nails certain realities of the mid eighties.

Fascinating.

Quite the body count.

A murder mystery—with pictures!

You’d be hard pressed to recognize the character from Pride and Prejudice, and I don’t think it was quite a fair play mystery, but not without its charms.

Weaves a spell that made me not hate it. Same can’t be said for the included David Foster Wallace essay about the novel.

Short and sweet with some delicious food descriptions, although I’m not sure if I’ll delve into the full series.
December 5, 2025 at 7:51 PM
Obviously I’m gonna read a murder mystery that takes place in my hometown.

Per usual with classic Japanese murder mysteries, there’s a high body count. Also there’s a big clue up front that I totally missed.
