I'm thinking the idea of returning to any sort of normalcy is ridiculously wishful thinking. We need to accept that what was previously unthinkable has now become very much possible.

But when "negotiations" don't yield results? And existing treaties give him the right to flood Greenland with troops? Do you really expect him to resist the temptation? Especially if he decides Europe doesn't have any compelling reaction? Putin made exactly that mistake with Ukraine. So can Trump.

Only at the cost of also inflicting massive self damage. I don't see them having the heart for a conflict like that. It will be much easier for Europe to write off Greenland and tell themselves that next time they will be more ready. Politicians almost always take the path of least resistance.

For sure. But realistically, what is anyone going to do to prevent it? For European and UK politicians, the required response to the threat is still unthinkable. They will largely remain in denial until it is too late.

How cute. The brief age of the "rules based order" is over. We are back to a new age of empires because "might is right". That it will be "illegal" won't matter. The old saying about possession being nine tenths of the law will apply.

But not the usual case.

The way I remember is that Affect is A verb.

There is no intervention on Greenland's behalf that makes any sense when the economic consequences for Europe are considered. The old norms no longer apply. We're going to have to get used to it. Nobody has the capacity (and in most cases the interest) in holding the US to account.

Greenland thinks the norms of international law still apply? How cute.

We need to get used to the idea that international law is being swept aside in favour of the philosophy of "might is right". Like it or not, that is where we are now heading.
