Not just ‘by tradition’. SS P & F were genuine historical figures. There is a graphic and almost contemporary account of their martyrdom with no imaginative elaborations. But it seems they’ve never been popular in England — maybe for that reason.

These reflect the important role of the smith in village life — it is possible that the local smith chose and paid for the image of ‘his’ saint. Some depict a popular story in which bishop Ambrose removed the leg from an uncontrollable horse, shoed it and then reattached it to the pacified animal.

St Eligius is the patron saint of several French and Netherlandish cities including Antwerp. His metalworking past made him also the patron, not only of goldsmiths, but also of blacksmiths and farriers. There are a number of images of the saint in East Anglian churches.

Eligius originally worked as a goldsmith in the service of two Frankish kings. He made crosses and chalices and embellished shrines. He later took holy orders and became a noted preacher who spread the gospel to large parts of Flanders. Eligius was bishop of Noyon from 641 until his death.
