No. of beds needed for flu patients fell last week, suggesting the peak has passed.

2 caveats:
- Numbers still high, will take time to fall
- High peak/rapid drop of 2022/23 appears an exception, not the norm.

Hopefully the worst is over, but the situation could still be very hard for some time.

Because we're yet to see full impact from this week's return to work/school, and the cold weather.

Have to hope flu admissions follow a similar path to 2022/23 i.e. rapid fall after the high peak.

But UKHSA weekly report shows most years have seen admissions at lower levels but for longer...

Some improvements on the elective care side, with a further drop in the number of people and cases on the waiting list and fewer very long waits.

But this is from November, and this progress will be hard to maintain over what we know is a tough December and January.

The monthly stats from December show a similar picture in urgent and emergency care.

The number of >12 hour trolley waits was very close to record levels...and worth remembering that these are delays taken from the decision to admit, not the time of arrival.

Winter 2024/25 has already been tough, but at least the weather has generally been pretty mild.

That's now changing, with the UKHSA dashboard showing amber cold-health alerts across England from 2-8 January.

Not an ideal start to 2025.

2022/23 saw a large peak of flu admissions which quickly faded to relatively low levels.

Other years had lower peaks but elevated levels of admissions for longer.

So far, this year has roughly tracked 2022/23 but no guarantee that the spike will fade as quickly.

...Still just under half the peak from winter 2022/23, which was arguably the toughest since the Covid-19 peak in Jan 2021.

Similar picture to latest UKHSA weekly monitoring report.

No, at least not yet.

2022/23 was arguably the worst winter since Covid-19. A bad outbreak of flu and very cold weather saw beds needed for flu patients peak at nearly 6,000.

Not yet clear if this winter will be as bad or even worse, still time to get vaccinated if you're eligible.

You’re right - we asked about this on the NHS’ 75th anniversary and found some big differences in what people think is causing strains in services. Some similarities too:
