I think Andor is a good modern example. It’s pretty easy to relate to the story through current events. It’s well executed. But watching it doesn’t exactly feel entertaining either.

I was just responding to your original comment that “the paranoid thrillers of the 70s were fun.” They’re well made and thought provoking to be sure but I think the reason they’re so well regarded today is that they weren’t trying to be escapist entertainment even if they were mostly allegorical.

Basic Instinct was just titillating schlock, imo and I am tired of reboot culture generally. But I am genuinely curious what paranoid thrillers from the 70s you’d consider fun and not depressing.

I find most of the paranoid thrillers of the 70s pretty bleak. The Parallax View, for instance, is an amazing film but it is also really depressing. Similarly, while Network isn’t really a thriller per se, its another film that reflected the mood of the moment and is just really depressing.
