Mt. Shasta is considered sacred by many Native American tribes, including the Wintu, Achumawi, Atsugewi, and Modoc. Some believe the mountain is the center of the universe and the home of the creator. The Wintu tribe has performed sacred ceremonies on the mountain since time immemorial.
