Woodbridge Tide Mill Museum is a Grade I listed mill dating from 1170, that still mills flour. Restored, it is a popular, interactive museum where working machinery and milling bring history to life
The European bullhead - a freshwater fish AKA 'miller's thumb' because millers got a distorted & enlarged thumb from rubbing grain between thumb & forefinger (the "Rule of Thumb"), like this poor fish's head. Illustration: Jonathan Couch (1789 – 1870) #milling #ruleofthumb #woodbridgetidemillmuseum

The flour dresser - a large sieve that separates flour by particle size from fine, white flour, through larger particles of flour (semolina), leaving only larger flakes of bran. #flourmilling #tidemillflour #woodbridgetidemillmuseum

Instruments in #woodbridgetidemillmuseum relentlessly continue to measure the tides, air pressure and phases of the moon. Regardless of whether we are open or not. Recent low tides have been uncharacteristically low. We are looking into it.

New pit wheel teeth from Woodbridge Boatyard. Delivered by this gentleman who was a student at the boatbuilding college in Lowestoft when Mill engineers Gary and Alex worked there. Alex taught him joinery from time to time. @alexhunterworkshop #woodbridgetidemillmuseum #millengineering

You can take a virtual tour of #woodbridgetidemillmuseum from inside the Mill. It may seem pointless but not everyone can climb our steep stairs. #wheelchairaccessible #AccessForAll

Above the wallower is the governor, the automatic tentering gear. Woodbridge is the only known British tide mill to have one. It compensates for variations in the speed of the waterwheel. They're common on windmills as wind speeds vary, but why did we need one?#woodbridgetidemillmuseum

An illustration of the 'Corn Route' in Oct 2011. It shows that the Flour Dresser (giant sieve) the boxy thing top right, was driven directly off the Layshaft. Also it shows that the flour must have been hoisted up the Mill again for this process. Sheesh #woodbridgetidemillmuseum #milling

In 1793 the present mill was built on the site of earlier ones. By the 1950s it had become the last working tide mill in the country, but in 1957 finally closed. It was saved in 1968, restored and opened to the public in 1973. #woodbridgettidemillmuseum
