Yeah, and most of the damage was delayed reaction. Austerity, tuition fees, and Brexit completely busted various bits of the state and the economy, but it took a while for all of them to really be felt, and the impact only became clear after Cameron/Osbourne had left office.

Thank you!

Ah interesting, it's applied for like a grant? What's the name of the scheme, out of curiosity?

One of the reason I like rounds in a pub, when they're not strictly rotated. A good chance for little acts of generosity and the maintenance of social bonds.

Fascinating. Do you think it is the slower, frog boiling effect of social media that is capturing people who would not have been radicalised by other means before?

A wonderful line from Mary Renault's 'Last of the Wine': "I wondered sometimes if he had the capacity for loving men at all, but did not want to insult him with the question."

There was a Guardian article years ago about folks who were incredibly famous in a country they didn't live in. Anonymous at home, but superstar, red-carpet, greeted by the president levels of fame when they went to one specific country. Basically fame you can turn on/off at will, sounded ideal.

Yeah, a 'go with the flow' mentality seems to be key, I have to turn off my writing teacher brain which is screaming about the importance of clarity and the sequencing of information, and then I can enjoy myself.

Just finished Deadhouse Gates - I found the style and structure frustrating in places, but it did stick the landing very well, so I will continue with the series.

Oops, yup, my brain refusing to accept the passage of time...

3. Return of the Obra Dinn

Enjoyed at first, but it started to become repetitive for me, so I didn't finish it.

6. Deadhouse Gates, Steven Erikson

I wobbled a little in the midst of this behemoth, finding the writing style frustrating in places. But it does stick the landing with some extraordinarily vivid passages.

5. Fallout (Season 2)

A step down from the first season - TV writers these days seem to be obsessed with keeping their main cast members apart for most of a season, which slows pace and wastes actor chemistry. Still good fun, mind you.

I'm surprised that they're saying that they intend to appeal, given that (leaving aside anything else) it's clearly unworkable in a practical sense and causes continuous damage – this ruling would seem to give them the chance to back down.

Perhaps they feel they still have to appeal to save face?

Like a medieval trial by combat, we should all be able to nominate a champion to stand for us in a social media flame war.
