Trains, buses, and politics

Ottawa, ON
They're at 3 days/week in the office, and even enforcement of that is spotty

Thousands of public servants in biggest federal departments breaking remote work rules | CBC News
Thousands of public servants working in the federal government's three biggest departments aren't following Ottawa's three-days-per-week office work rule, federal data shows.

About 25% of metro-region jobs were located in the office district downtown pre-pandemic, but work from home did a number on the office district and it's not worth the extra cost and runtime to get downtown, IMO

My suspicion is that the feds dump the TOMQ corridor services onto the provinces, and Queen's Park sets up an inadequate Kingston GO. Will they pay for a slow speed Corridor service when there's an HSR service they just spent $100 billion on?

Me, to other Canadians: Man, fuck Bombardier, fuck Irving Shipyards, fuck the dairy cartels, ugh

Me when a Y*nqui says we should get rid of them for their products:

In Toronto? Where else has the transit connections of Toronto Union station, seven GO lines, and Line 1 (as well as being walking distance to the largest walkable concentration of jobs in the GTA)? Bloor-Yonge?

> everything points to collecting fares
Almost every transit system collects fares and does not meltdown like OCT. I don’t see the causality between fare collection and whatever it is they’re doing
January 23, 2026 at 5:13 PM
Fares do go towards service though, that’s what they’re for. What would you replace $180 million in revenue with?

The Ecopass has been gone over a decade. I don’t understand the Ottawa infatuation with our own unique features (derogatory). And cities across the world do not have Ecopass equivalents but somehow manage to operate buses without service meltdowns

(It’s worth noting that the double deckers are also all-door boarding, but the artic fleet is melting down and will soon be replaced with 40 fts)
January 23, 2026 at 4:58 PM
All 350 artics are end of life and we’re buying 50. That seems like a decrease to me. There’s no reason to think that schedulers are following your assumptions anymore than mine. And I also call BS in your assertions.
January 23, 2026 at 4:51 PM
All door boarding only exists on certain buses and that proportion will drop as the artics are retired. Schedulers can't assume the bus will have all door boarding.

Personally, I've never seen a bus delayed by fare collection on OC Transpo.
