We already struggle to get phones for people - they are absolutely essential! Emails (from the Home Office, for example), messages, translation apps, storing documents - and yes, keeping in touch with family.

I expect he meant 'If you are forced to make that terrifying journey here we will do everything we can to help you, just as we signed up to do in the 1951 Refugee Convention' but just didn't express himself very clearly?

Would it have been easier for them if they had focused on explaining that these people are (by definition) fleeing persecution, they are desperate and need our help, rather than pushing the narrative that they are 'illegal' and out of control and trying all ways to just stop them coming?
