Lots of light and white on white (or another light monochrome) helps keep the space airy, with a feeling of more room than there is. I love this space!
A small living room with white walls and shelving. The vintage coffee and display tables also have white tops. The only dark colors in the room are an overstuffed navy blue couch, dark woods, and a vintage wooden chair with black padded seat and back. A large mirror hangs over the display table at the far end. Except for the couch and an end table, all the vintage wood furniture features clean lines and an air of delicate but sturdy function. Large, open windows behind the couch flood the room with light, further adding to the feeling of spaciousness.

I have to change a lot of things in my life soon, including my living situation, and can I just say, it is stressful as heck, and I am not handling it well.

Vertical space is clutch.
A tiny kitchen in white and silver, making use of vertical space with shelves over the cabinets to the ceiling and cutting boards on the wall. A black pegboard is mounted over the stove with pans and spice jars mounted on it. A shelf is mounted on the connecting wall and bears large jars of ingredients. A very small kitchen with a built in storage shelves and shelves mounted on the walls, bearing dishes, utensils, pans, kitchen appliances, and utensils hanging or sitting in the shelves. The room has wood plank floors and exposed rafters. The counters are all butcher block, and the shelves are unfinished wood. The walls of the tiny room are white plaster, and the enclosed lower cabinetry beneath the sink is dark grey.

Another example, with a full-sized bed and longer couch oriented with the long side of the bed. This still allows for a lot of room.
An elevated full-size bed with a long couch beneath it, and area rug, coffee table, and two small occasional tables. The ladder to the bed is at one end of the couch, next to the wall.

Stick a tiny armoire where that plant is, and you basically have my entire living and bedroom in my tiny Paris walkup in 2006. The radiator was on the wall behind the armoire, at the end of the bed platform. This photographer would have been standing in my tiny kitchen. 1/2
A bed on a platform (mine was a full, but this is a twin), with a small couch, credenza, and television below it, at either end. A small area rug covers the floor, and two pictures hand on the wall. A narrow ladder leads up to the bed, which has railings. A plant is at the right end of the bed, which has two sides against the walls, as it is placed in the corner. This is an extremely efficient and comfortable use of space, especially with a full-sized bed. I actually really loved it and would do it again in a heartbeat. I am 5'7 and had just enough room to stand fully upright under the bed, with about an inch to spare.

A twin bed, bedside table, and swinging chair on top of a riser. 4 steps lead up to it. Underneath the riser is room for a pull out desk and rolling chair, a small craft cart and shelves. The aesthetic is very Nordic, with lots of unfinished wood, clean lines, and bright whites.
