Metal Garden (by @aleksandraht.bsky.social) is a great short sci-fi shooter with gorgeous environments, inspired by many of my favorite games.

The End of Gameplay (by @droqen.bsky.social) is a great exploration and thinkpiece examining gameplay and the lack of it.

Oikospiel (2017) (by David Kanaga) is a splendidly maximalist dystopian poetry game about windmills, unionization, and dogs.

Wanderstop (by @ivyroadgames.bsky.social) had my favorite narrative of the year. I really enjoyed how well the cozy gameplay meshed with the central messaging.

A Dark Room (2013) (by Doublespeak Games) is my new favorite idle/clicker game with a relatively short playtime and a really fun way in which it slowly reveals its world.

Milk Inside/Outside a Bag of Milk... (2020/2021) (by Nikita Kryukov) - I thought they were one game. Great vibes and soundtrack.

Anthology of the Killer (2024) (by thecatamites) is a charming as fuck dystopic cacophony with an art style I'm still drooling over.

Cape Hideous (2024) (by @jakeclover.bsky.social) is a phenomenal little adventure game with intricate line work that confounds in such a delightful way.

Omega Point (by @cathroon.itch.io) is a short but highly effective apocalyptic walking sim music enjoyer game. You WILL discover some new bands to listen to.

Strange Jigsaws (by @flebpuzzles.bsky.social) was a delightful exploration of jigsaw puzzles that I greatly enjoyed playing with a friend.

Going to spew out some thoughts on my favorite games that I played in 2025 (regardless of release year)

Consume Me (by @qdork.bsky.social) is obvious Game of the Year for me. Just a fantastically executed life sim strategy game with a killer art style and music and one of the best game endings.

Took my parents to see the Trans-Siberian Orchestra for the first time. Not my usual kindof music, but I had fun. Lasers are so fun. That and the rest of the light show was an absolute visual treat. Some of the video they used definitely looked like AI, though, so that sucked.

After almost 9 years, I finally went back and completed Oikospiel Book I by David Kanaga, the dog opera video game. What a wonderfully maximalist collage of third party assets and musical objects.

I'm a Demon's Souls truther now. Sorry for those who didn't like the remake, I thought it was beautiful. After playing so many souls-likes that emphasize difficulty, it was refreshing going back through this game and being rewarded for patience and problem solving. I had a chill ass time.

Nice to have another grand strategy game to absolutely suck the life juice out of me (in a good way). I'm 37 hours into Europa Universalis IV across 6 days of playing so far. I had my low points, but democratic Portugal is doing great and I'm even allied with Morocco now. Pretty game, too.

Consume Me (by @qdork.bsky.social, @apthomson.bsky.social, @frogfungus.bsky.social)

My new GOTY for the year 2025. The fantastic ending bookends a satisfying and thematic gameplay loop that all just WORKS in so many different ways. The 2D/3D artstyle and soundtrack complimented the game beautifully

SWAT 4 (2005)

Played this and it's DLC for the first time, going "non-lethal" and solo w/out my squad. Frustrating at times with how unpredictable suspects can be, but it was otherwise a blast to play. Environments were juicy af. Obviously police fantasy, but they didn't shy away from the horror.

_ΩMEGA_POINT (by @cathroon.itch.io)

This game was absolutely splendid, so I wrote a bunch of words for it. It's a mech exploration game where you listen into nearby radio stations. 🧵

Earlier this year, I got together with some friends to make 5 little games over a week in Milwaukee, WI that were put into a compilation. They include exploration, racing, puzzles, and co-op action. The package also includes a lengthy post-mortem from every dev.

Here's some shots of the mall. Honestly, it was quite relaxing to explore. There were some other people, but not nearly enough.
