Viv let a small breath slide past her lips and tried to keep it inconspicuous. Work-talk. Well, that was as #safe a place as any to start.

“We nailed it today, don’t you think?” Rowan continued, and her tone was light. Friendly. A lie.

On a hot wave of something akin to alarm, Viv did her best to ignore fate bearing down upon her.

But it came anyway.

“Hello, Viv,” Rowan murmured, close enough for her voice to thread through the din without touching anyone else. “#Miss me?”

And maybe she did, for her arms tightened around Rowan’s waist as if she couldn’t #bear to let go.

Viv squeezed her eyes shut, and Rowan suddenly wondered if she even wanted to know the answer.

“It’s not what I’ve done,” Viv whispered, voice taut. “It’s what I might do.” She exhaled sharply, leaning away from Rowan’s proximity. “Let me #leave... please.”

Today’s scenes had cost Rowan every ounce of her tenacity, and she knew there was no way she could carry Viv through four more days of filming. Not because she lacked the #skill, but rather because her heart wouldn’t handle keeping silent while Viv fell apart in front of her.

Viv braced one gloved hand against the wooden frame, as though she needed the anchor, and Rowan’s heart nearly broke for the torture etched onto her face.
“I had nothing to do with it,” Viv exhaled, her voice taut. “I didn’t know. But I can’t #disagree with Eliane, because she’s right.”

When Viv entered, Rowan looked up – and Viv braced herself for a flicker of recognition. Irritation. *Something*.

Instead, Rowan gave her the smooth, civil smile she usually saved for #red carpets and press junkets, and, with the cordiality of a stranger, said, “Good morning, Vivienne.”
