"The outspread wings of the American eagle are broad enough to shelter all who are likely to come."
The coup de grace here is that this was posted to "r/meth" for some reason

Many years ago I heard Ta Nehisi Coates in conversation and it was suggested that many found his focus on "the struggle" was discouraging. He said "I don't know why. It should be inspiring." When asked why, he said something I think about every day:

"Because the struggle is what you can control."

Pluralism for being terrible

Cannot say I have had a serious conversation with someone who used this word even once

I know people hate SIDEWAYS on here but there's a moment where Jack is like "she's into you, man" and Miles goes "she works for tips!" and more people need to internalize this

I think it is even more elemental than all of this, which is that we are living in a society that has slowly and then all at once decided that naked selfishness, broadly defined, is aspirational. But no one wants to fuck someone like that, much less build a life and a relationship with them.

Your story has helped me (and others) so much with my own struggle with this. I am glad you’re here and am grateful for your advocacy in this.

I understand that you do this in chronological order but it is *incredibly funny* to kick this off with BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES
December 4, 2025 at 1:43 AM
I hate to say this but it is in fact some 1984 shit to say "telling people not to commit crimes is itself a crime"
December 4, 2025 at 12:57 AM
How is this real
December 3, 2025 at 1:30 AM
I very much agree with this point on the merits/in a vacuum but if this is about what I think it's about I am not certain that that is the primary thing people are responding to

Being able to say "I don't know what time it is" is a precursor (for me) for being able to actually live "one day at a time" (which is important for me For Reasons)

A little? But I will say chunking out a couple hours of leisure time on a day off/a non-work portion of the day where you put your phone in the other room and read/watch a movie without distractions/meditate/free-write/*something* is a game-changer in terms of relationship to time (other stuff too)

Quite striking how Costco is The Only Not Bad Company, proving that it would simply not be that hard for many other companies to simply also be Not Bad Companies

And yet

Some day maybe we will just move beyond a personalist/"Stan culture" prism of politics and just have, like, values
December 2, 2025 at 12:48 AM
I keep seeing this thread/things related to it pop into my feed and all it makes me think is "We do not have to see everything through the lens of 'socialist vs capitalist'", what an exhausting way to look at the world

My problem with the slogan at first blush is “this is some shit a GM and a coach would say at a press conference about their vision for a team that hasn’t made the playoffs in ten years and is in danger of missing again this year”
November 30, 2025 at 4:51 PM
Certainly that is A Problem

*broad agreement with you, to be clear (ran out of characters)
November 30, 2025 at 4:41 PM
I don’t mean to come across that way and in other experience I have found a lot of broad agreement. I do find reflexive defense of this tendency in the party to be pretty distasteful and find it frustrating when people I otherwise respect engage in it. I recognize this platform flattens this stuff.

I think finding a version of it (much the way The New Deal was meant to call back to The Square Deal) wouldn’t be a bad place to start. I think “Strong Floor, No Ceiling” is not a bad slogan (to your point) but it doesn’t really capture anyone’s imagination (hence the reaction here)
November 30, 2025 at 4:37 PM
I was talking about “the new deal” specifically, and also I think you know that
November 30, 2025 at 4:34 PM
I also simply do not agree that the new deal only means something because it’s in the past. It was a very clear signal of a break with the old way of doing things, and the fact that you are insisting it isn’t is kind of telling.
November 30, 2025 at 4:33 PM
I think it would be a start
November 30, 2025 at 4:32 PM
“The New Deal” meant “you’ve been fucked by the old one”. “Yes We Can” meant “they think they can stop us, we’ll show them”.
