Picked up Ilya Kaminsky’s DEAF REPUBLIC today and this was the first poem.

With solidarity to everyone protesting today.
We Lived Happily during the War And when they bombed other people's houses, we protested but not enough, we opposed them but not enough. I was in my bed, around my bed America was falling: invisible house by invisible house by invisible house- I took a chair outside and watched the sun. In the sixth month of a disastrous reign in the house of money in the street of money in the city of money in the country of money, our great country of money, we (forgive us lived happily during the war.

I recently learned it is called a “paw bouquet” when dogs scrunch all their feet together. Which makes this kind of like “paw ikebana”

I am really loving Katherine Larson’s THE WEDDING OF THE FOXES. She references so many authors and texts I’m not familiar with (a huge plus) and the looseness and space in the essays gives me a lot of time to think.

I find learning about wildlife and wildlife rehab to be immensely fulfilling. Spent part of my day with a group of people who all came out to rescue this bald eagle and take him to the local care facility.

Emma Pattee’s TILT is out in paperback today and I fully expect it to become a NYT bestseller!

On the surface it’s a page-turner about a 8 month pregnant woman trying to find her husband after The Big One hits PDX. But it’s so much more than that.

I’m trying to actually use my camera more. These photos of a hawk being mobbed by crows was too blurry (a lesson to double check shutter speed!) but I still like the drama of it.

I’m not a wolf expert by any means but here’s what I wrote.
I'm contacting you today to urge you to vote against H.R 845, disingenuously referred to as the "pet and livestock act". This bill would remove protections for the grey wolf in Oregon as well as other states. Though the wolf has rebounded from extinction, there are still only 200 of them in Oregon and each one is under threat. Grey wolves, despite what some are claiming, are get from a "recovered" species. Threats from landowners as well as habitat fragmentation continue to harm wolf populations. More importantly, the years since wolf populations have risen has shown the importance of returning predators like the wolf to our ecosystems. Wolves' impact on elk populations and other grazers are beneficial for songbird species as well as important ecosystem engineers like beavers. They also balance out coyote populations. Time and time again, we've seen that killing wolves doesn't benefit livestock owners, it just disrupts the healthy ecosystem and creates more issues in the form of overgrazing by prey species, disruption of predator dynamics, and so on. This bill is not the way forward. Wolves already might have larger numbers but suffer from low genetic diversity due to fragmented habitat. Delisting the wolf will make this problem grow. As humans we have a responsibility to manage species for the good of all creatures who share the land with us. In Oregon, the best thing we can do for our state is to protect wolves and allow them to keep sharing it.

I just finished Sarah Waters’ AFFINITY and was blown away.

Slow-burn gothic historical fiction set in Victorian England about a lady who starts visiting an inmate at a women’s prison. There are Spiritualists. Romantic obsessions. Secrets.

I’m going to stay up thinking about this one.

Today I was writing by the river when I was blessed by a nutria who decided to do his grooming right next to me.

Took my dog on a pre-sunrise walk and was delighted by this Great Blue Heron who decided to fly up and perch in the tree next to us.

Trader Joe’s is selling Harry and David pears. My grandma used to send them to me every year and they were the most expensive pears ever but also so delicious.

I was working at Book Court in Brooklyn when A SICK DAY FOR AMOS MCGEE came out. It’s still one of my favorite children’s books.

So I am thrilled that the authors now have A SNOW DAY FOR AMOS MCGEE!
