Yep. This is reality hitting Neil Druckmann when it comes to his story choices for Part 2. You might get away with it in a game, where it’s all one game, that everyone bought at once, and they didn’t know the twists. But a TV show of seasons? Interests die fast.

But as is, I’m not getting the Jacob’s Ladder ending from it. I’m getting half baked loop theory, where Silent Hill is like “Oh poor James. I’ll send you back in time to save Mary.” Which isn’t earned. At all. And comes out of nowhere.

That’s what I was thinking or expecting. Like after the credits you cut to a shot of the car underwater, confirming that what you just saw was James’ dying fantasy of going back and saving Mary. Or if you want things more vague, just have the credits end, and over black you hear underwater sounds.

I get the feeling there’s a Heaven’s Night in Japan that both Team Silent and the Survivor Devs went to, since Survivor released 2 years before SH2. And both Devs stole the title.

Great news. Shows that you really can do a lot from very little. Especially since he marketed it himself, and distributed it himself.

Ya. Gans claims the ending is meant to be like Jacob’s Ladder, where you think the character is being united with his son, only to reveal him dead. Thus the ending is a dying dream. But since the ending doesn’t cut back to James underwater, everyone thinks he time travelled.

Because trying to do both serves no one. It makes the fans angry, it makes the general audience confused and frustrated, and the creators feel disrespected. Instead of telling one story, you’re telling two mixed together, with no time to do either justice.

Like if Gans wants to tell a story inspired by SH2, about an artist that fell in love with a girl, but lost her to a cult, and was forced to kill her “Because it’s what she wanted” and the experience drove him insane, cool tell that original story. Don’t make it a SH2 adaption.

Ya, the term “Make it your own” really isn’t justified here. Every time I hear that, I think “Then why not just make something original? Why do you feel you need to take someone else’s work, and rewrite it into something else?”

My biggest issue is that it’s a Gans choice. And the reason is “the film did not allow enough time to explain James’s motivation otherwise”. And I’m like “Maybe if you didn’t waste time on your Jacob Crane cult fiction, you’d have time to adapt the story your suppose to adapt?”

Definitely that’s one reason. He’s a great cinematographer, so not getting him back definitely hurt the movie. But I think a lot of the problem is just the movie using too much green screen. And the sets that weren’t were cheap. Whereas so much of the first movie is actually Ontario locations.

Anyways, that was all my speculations before the movie came out. Now just dead ideas for a disappointing movie. I figured I should let some of these out, so they don’t stay locked away in my head forever. Just the random idea of a fan, never to be. 🙂

The idea being that real life Angela doesn’t look like Mary at all, but for some reason James can’t help seeing her as Mary. Like his mind is trying to find a replacement for her in other people. But nope. She really is just another Maria temp character in the movie. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The final speculation I had was when it was revealed that Angela is played by the same actress for Mary and Maria. The movie’s reason is stupid as hell, but before I knew why, I thought it was a genius idea that James, not only is making Marias, but also seeing Mary in others.

Speaking of SH4, I thought Gans’ James might be merged with Henry for this reason, since his hairstyle reminds me of him. I also thought he might be a photographer, since Henry was one. But nope. He’s just inspired by Mick Jagger for some reason, and is a painter. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The third speculation was when we heard the Jacob Crane stuff. I thought this might be Gans merging element from SH4, and giving Walter a bigger role into James’ story. I didn’t like this, but was curious what Gans was going for, since I didn’t mind the Christabella change in the first film.

But nope. They made it present day. Apparently Silent Hill is back to being a normal town after the curse of Alessa lifted I guess, and is populated like nothing happened. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This one I’m a tad more bummed didn’t happen, simply because it probably would’ve justify James‘ new look, and give them a license to make other costume changes. The OG game is speculated to be either late 70‘s or early 80’s, so it wouldn’t be too drastic of a change, but a justify change.

When I heard Return was being made, my next speculation was to have the movie set in the early 70‘s, with James and Mary visiting before the town fire, and then James visiting 3 years after (Mary was in a hospital outside Silent Hill for those 3 years.)

Originally, before Revelations came out, I thought the second film would follow Christopher Da Silva (are James replacement) going to Silent Hill to find Rose (Are Mary replacement.) And with Dark Sharon being our Laura. But they went with SH3 instead.
