Kenneth J. Dunkley invented 3-D viewing glasses. Dunkley discovered that blocking two points in a person's peripheral vision will cause an ordinary picture to appear 3-Dimensional, so he developed his 3-DVG to block out these points.

Martha Jones De Leon invented a cooking apparatus that included a lamp for providing dry heat, & a water reservoir for providing steam. This was an early precursor to steam tables now used in food buffets to keep food warm during gatherings.

Dr. George Washington Carver holds 3 patents. One was for creating a cosmetic vanishing cream made from peanuts, & listed over 300 uses for the legume. other two patents involved the manufacture & production of paint & stains from natural clay.

Miriam Elizabeth Benjamin, teacher & musician, invented chair to quietly signal for assistance by pressing a button. Chair used in hotels, hospitals, railway stations, & airplanes. She also composed songs & marches for piano and band.

Dr. Mark Dean is in National Hall Inventors Hall of Fame. He is a vice president with IBM & helped invent personal computer, plug-in subsystems and peripherals like disk drives, video gear, speakers, & scanners. He holds over 40 patents.

Dr. Patricia E. Bath was an ophthalmologist and laser scientist. She patented a device that improves on the use of lasers to remove cataract lenses. She received her medical degree from Howard University (my alma mater).

George Edward Alcorn invented an X-ray imaging spectrometer. It is used with planetary mapping, space telescopes & other satellites. For this work Alcorn was named NASA Inventor of the Year and was inducted into National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Jan Ernst Matzeliger an immigrant from Suriname /Dutch Guiana spoke little English & worked in a shoe factory. He patented a machine which automated process of joining upper part of a shoe to the sole. It produced 700 pairs of shoes per day.

Charles Edward Page applied for a patent 8 months before Wright brothers took flight. Page's aircraft was a mechanical balloon device. Page shipped his aircraft to the World’s Fair half million dollar aeronautic competition, but it disappeared.

Lewis Latimer drew blueprints for Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone. Latimer patented a process for a more durable carbon filament encased in cardboard. The incandescent lighting was practical affordable & longer lasting than Thomas Edison’s.

Garrett Morgan invented the automatic traffic signal. He had an interest in public safety & invented a device to control traffic after a tragic collision between an automobile, horse & carriage in his hometown. He sold manufacturing rights to GE for $40,000.
