This is the right answer. There will be no regret. They wanted a cruel, authoritarian strong man, regardless of the consequences. Any negative outcomes will be blamed on scapegoats.

They LIKE the black and white world he offers (well, white world I guess…). They WANT an authoritarian strong man to fix all their problems. And they DON’T CARE who gets hurt for them to have their comfort. Stupid might be easier to understand, but it gives them a pass for their cruelty.
