Recently rewatched it and loved it all over again. Tykwer being (one of) his own composers is never less than staggering to me.

And Cloud Atlas somehow had better music!

Uncannily similar to this Norm joke.

They’re so determined to manufacture their own Wessel but keep botching it and radicalizing their opposition.

Just rewatched them, albeit at home. It came into being at the perfect moment to have to be just a little scrappy even with all the tech and practical mixing.

Even just a few years later the CGI would predominate

I haven't even seen F1 and know this has to be true.

I'm baffled too but, at least for most of the props, I know WETA fabricates actually versions and then scans them. Maybe costumes were the same?

Still odd but there *may* have been physical costumes in the mix.

Season two of Australia has an all timer conclusion.

Rewatched this last night and was pleased at how great it still is.

Griebe's cinematography is lush in the best ways and Heil/Kleimak/Tykwer's score really soars. Great adaptation of damned tricky material.

The past decade has really revealed the number of people who want to be viewed as principled in their values without ever once being willing to have said principles cost them anything.

Kristol paid a price. Not my guy but he seemingly means what he says. Counts for a lot.

I got over this a long time ago. It'll come out or it won't. Same with Rothfuss.

I just focus on the (too many) books I already have to read than worry about books that don't exist (commercially).

Ken Liu's Dandelion Dynasty and Abercrombie exist too. Those are completed series.

The phone call was the scene of the year for me. Such a hairpin turn to pull off so expertly.

I've also been known to randomly shout "You desecrate this space; speaking of robots!" periodically at my wife.

Rang Tang Ding Dong is an all timer needle drop. I say that as someone (see my last name) who acknowledges how poorly aged in objective terms the song is.

If they released a cut of Final Reckoning that hacks off most of that first hour then it would be second worst. Woo getting a huge budget to go nuts is some real, "we didn't know how good we had it," shit even if it's minor key.

Hard agree. For a lot of reasons but it's no contest purely on these terms: Villaneuve and Linus Sandgren using 70mm Imax or the Russos and Newton Sigel (who is talented but not in the same league) shooting digital? Not a hard choice.

They assume that God must inherently be as transactional and cynical as they are. Which sort of affirms the notion that most people imagine God as a vaguely abstracted version of themselves and not vice versa.

PTA dislikes Scarface but left Taylor's "Tony Montana shit" improv in the movie since he figured Perfidia would be a big fan.

I grew up in an evangelical environment and those orgs are rife with petty tyrants who will pedant you to death (found plenty of secular iterations too) Comrade Josh viscerally reminded me those people.

That there's so many legit reads of so many characters speaks to the quality of the film.

My read, he believes in the mission, knows Bob is likely legit but is such an innate try hard that he can't help himself from gatekeeping in the most obnoxious way. *He* studied the lit, so everyone must.

It's notable that he's explicitly told to apologize and mean it.

Did she take Nyquil and fall asleep during a double feature of Django and Basterds?

The past couple years have been rife with young starlets trying to have their own POSSESSION moment and J Law just went ahead and went fully feral in her own, definitional, way. Astounding performance.

I suspect you're right. Sinners winning will be absolutely deserved but Greenwood's work is no less integral to its movie. Just subtler (extremely relatively speaking).
January 12, 2026 at 3:02 PM
Cinematography is maybe the most locked categories this year other than Original Song. I can't see anyone winning over Durald Arkapaw (deservedly).

Since Goransson has two Oscars, I'm hoping Greenwood gets score.
