Trumpism’s Primal Scream

Trumpism's effort to undo modernity is as doomed to fail as uninventing the light bulb, the airplane, or the computer. But not before MAGA does consequential damage.

Post-9/11, the GOP warned bogiemen from somewhere vaguely Middle East were coming to kill us in our beds. Today it's GOP armed thugs tricked out for Fallujah. In 2005, I asked whether Americans were “fighting terrorists, breeding them, or becoming them.” Now we know.

Absurdist theater based on Donald Trump’s presidency presents a problem for the Hamburg State Opera. Reality is overtaking attempts to satirize Trump.

GOP donors see handsome returns for investments in political donations. They at least adjacent to the "Epstein class," out there where sketchy deals are handshake-informal and, says John Ganz, “often downright criminal.” But then, Donald always wanted to be a gangster

The political divide goes beyond left and right. A less noticed divide is between Americans of principle and those who root their life choices on maximizing principal.

Sue them!
Democrats filed 12+ bills this term for removing qualified immunity from federal officials who violate people’s civil rights under color of law. Except Prof Akhil Reed Amar of Yale Law believes individual states might empower state victims to sue for damages.

"Observing human behavior confirms that for some among us, the perfidious lust for unbridled power and the imposition of cruelty in its quest know no bounds and are bereft of human decency. And the rule of law be damned."

AND ... you won't need a law license because you're being hired to ignore the law and the courts. ICE washouts welcome!

Sorry if it doesn't pay as well as brutalizing random civilians.

Agent: We don't need a warrant.

I’ve advised celebrating little victories again and again and again. Just not recently.

Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Georgetown University, advises doing just that: “I do not regret to inform you that we are going to win.”

The Border Patrol killing of a licensed gun owner was an attack on a civil liberty that the right thinks of as its own: the 2nd Amendment. Is this attack on rights something the country can withstand for three more years, “or is American democracy truly in peril?”

What’s left of Donald Trump’s “very good brain” won't last another 3 years. Trump is surrounded by aides who sound like “brainwashed soldiers in ‘The Manchurian Candidate.’” The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists worries we are the closest we’ve ever been to catastrophe.

Charles Duhigg contrasts political efforts based on mobilizing and on organizing. A paramilitary invasion in Minneapolis gave the less-engaged “permission” to join get off their couches and join the fight. Is that what it’s going to take everywhere?

Radley Balko finds parallels btw Minneapolis and the Boston Massacre. JD Last sees them in Gettysburg. The national backlash to Renee Good's and Alex Pretti’s murders brushed aside Trump admin propaganda the way Union fire stopped Pickett’s attack on Cemetery Ridge.

Remember in the aftermath of the Minneapolis killings of Good and Pretti, it's men like this that CBP hires and lets loose on American citizens.

DHS must think Bull Connor was an amateur.

This video is from Chicago in October.

"If You See Something, Say Something®" is a national campaign by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) encouraging the public to report suspicious, terrorism-related activities.

Citizens of Minneapolis saw DHS. They said something.

Stepping In It

Conservatives are by-God absolutist about the 2nd Amendment so long as it only protects them. CBP's killing of Alex Pretti, a licensed concealed-carry gun owner, has the Trump 2.0 in trouble w/the NRA & spiraling out of control in damage-control mode.

The Party of Trump is as predictable as it is unprincipled. They reflexively double down in response to failures.

In the wake of public outrage over a CBP agent shooting and killing Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, government agents are sticking to their guns. Literally.
