The special relationship means nothing here in the United States. Never has. Ask Americans which country has a special relationship with the USA, and you'll hear "Israel" (or these days maybe "Russia").

He admires Margaret Thatcher, he complains about regulations, he refuses to raise taxes - why is he in the Labour Party?

The "left-wing" party has become more and more indistinguishable from the Conservatives. Not sure what it is these days but it sure isn't left-wing.
