I’ve thought a lot about this and why I know when I served I would’ve pushed the button on a drone strike in Yemen and not a missile attack in the Caribbean when both are arguably illegal orders. Now I understand why doing the former opens the door to the latter and I wish more people did.

Why not just tax them until they aren’t billionaires anymore or they go away and ruin someone else’s country?

Why can’t they just let the invisible hand of the market pick whoever is best at capitalism like in a civilized country?

I went to a very liberal law school in 2008 and even there it was discussed as a dirty little secret if at all; an anomaly, in spite of all the evidence to the contrary. It was just one bad decision from an otherwise solid institution, not the first step towards authoritarianism.

I hope people appreciate the difference between responsible use of force by the USCG and the cinematic abuse of USN assets for murder on the high seas. These “traffickers” are mostly underemployed fishermen with one rusty pistol between them for defense against pirates. They always surrender.
